Nice score man. That parade drum is sweet. Love marching snares of any make model year.
The Karma Gods must have been smileing on me yesterday.
I ran across this 50's era, I think, 14" Rogers Parade Drum on CL.
It is in really good shape for being over 50 years old. The snare strainer and snares are missing but everything else seems good. hoops, shell, lugs, etc.
I need Kona to weigh in on this as it looks exactly like the one he restored last year I think. The guy also gave me a Slingerland Radio king 8"x12" tom that looks like it is from the late 30's, with tom mount. Still has the original calf skin heads on it and clam shell lugs. Going to have to get some expert opinions on that one. The lacquer is flakeing in spots and it was a thick coat.
IT can probably be restored. I am thinking somebody out there needs this for there 40's Radio King set or project. Here are some pics.

Nice find VIbes! Love the look of that marching snare, and that Radio King "throw in" is a real piece of history. I hope it gets restored.

I can fix that Parade snare up really nice.
The radio king is a little different story. I am consulting with some vintage guys on procedures. The finish is so old it is dry and starting to flake off.
The drum it'self is in excelent condition. I took the calf skin reso head off last night to have a peek inside and "wow"! Pristine condition. Don't think it had ever been removed. All the original parts, screws, etc are shiny as the day it was built.
dude that is awesome, totally worth restoring. they dont make em like that anymore, thats for sure.
WOW! what a find! Congrats!
Vibes love that old Rogers stuff!! can't wait to see the finished project! don't let us down now as you know we ALL will be watching..
Enjoy the Music!

Sweet deal!
It weird to see finish on a bearing edge.
Got the drum stripped and sanded. Forgot to put the hoops in the pic.
Cleaned up the hardware, except the badge.
right on man, those 2 stage tension rods are huge! im sure its possible, but im not even sure where you could find a direct replacement for those.
yeah i wouldn't touch the badge either dude, maybe a quick wipedown to get the dirt off.
overall great job man, you can tell for sure what the sanding did. that is a must for almost all restorations IMO. keep us posted man, i love these kind of threads!
Can't wait to see the finished results!

Vibes, looks like the sanding went well! its tricky not to damage the veneer..take it slow to assure proper techique in finish so all your prep work won't be compromised

Yes, I was really careful. That is a thin piece of outer ply wood. Just took off the finish. Going to put some tung oil on it to bring out the grain and treat the wood.
Also finished cleaning up the late 1930's Radio King Tom. Just needs some new heads.
Wonder if I can get away with this little vintage set up.

Well do you want an honest opinion? I would keep it but maybe use it as a floor tom
( on the stand of course ) maybe to left of snare, then keep an eye out for a silver sparkle tom to match set! Now going against the majority I am sure you could repaint the tom with a silver center band then do a new blue fade top and bottom. That would kinda make it tie in..and keep with traditional color theme.

I have some more matching toms. Just thought it would be different to use that 75 year old vintage tom occasionally.
I have pics in my profile albums of a few different configurations in Silver Sparkle.
Very cool VIbes! Cant' wait to see how the restoration on the marching drum turns out, and that Radio King tom looks cool just the way it is in that set up, IMHO. The tom give the whole kit a more vintage look.

Got the Parade Drum sanded and just put a couple coats of Teak Oil on it and the rims. Brings out the grain nicely.
Had to do a little repair work on the top lighter color rim. Just a little wood filler in a couple of places.
Looks like you are on the way to a beauty! its amazing what just a little light sanding will reveal..

Finished the drum with what I had. Still need the snare strainer, snares and butt.
Not going to worry about it right now. I will keep a eye out for parts.
That is a sweet looking drum!!!! Nice job.
Thanks Ploughman. Don't know where I can find original snare strainer parts.
may just measure the holes and see what I can find to fit.
VIBES, good job! looks fantastic, since you spent the time to do this restore, wait a bit check around and look for original strainer parts to keep it pure! it may be just a click away!
