    How does it work?

If I was to play live, is this how the tech side works?...drums-->mics-->mixer-->speaker/amp?

And, do most drummers have their own microphones, mixer, etc? Or what is typically standard?

    Thanks.

Your path to sound through a PA is bang on. (technically amp, then speaker but now im nitpicking) Do drummers have their own stuff? Guess that depends on the venue- to be ready for anything, i would say yes- if you're playing a small venue you may not need anything- a bit bigger, kick drum mic- bigger, kickand snare, maybe 2 overhead condenser mics- bigger? you have a sound man, and he's got all the mics needed- you just show up with your kit, he'll do the mic set up.
    hoipefully this helps,

Randy, it's all over the place with this kind of thing. If you're in one regular band, they'll usually offer the gear with the sound system and you'll usually help set it up. Some bands have their own sound techs too so the tech will do most everything. Other bands hardly use anything but their sound suffers. So you really have to gauge it for yourself. Most drummers will buy their own mics at the very least.

A lot of live DVD's take their audio straight from the venue. Watch any one, it's an audio feed straight from the mixer.
So itchie, how did the kick sound?

99% of the time if a venue is big enough you need full sound reinforcment it will have it supplied. If it isnt supplied, hire a good soundman with his own PA system, he will have mics he knows and will work with them.

The most I run in smaller venues is a kick mic and a single overhead.

    Perfect. Thanks everyone.

Tom, I was thinking the same thing on at least having a decent mic kit.

I don't own any mics for my kit. I have no plans on buying any in the near future.

Hi Randy! I invested in a small venue PA to support my 5pc. kit or to support a small band. The push to buy the drum mics was to explore another realm of drumming. My PA is mainly Peavey and I bi-amp the mains and subs and tie the two together with a rack mounted crossover. It's worked out great for me and my oldies band which has 5 vocalist. I'm limited in channels due to the singers so most of the time I just use one overhead mic. I feel lucky if I get to mic the kick. If the PA isn't used for the band, I'll set it up in my garage and mic the kit to experience the thrill of having it amplified.

I started out with the D series 5pc. Audix drum mic kit and added two Shure Beta57 and one AKG T-170 small diaphram directional mic.

Here's the PA set up for the band:

And here it's used soley for drums:

I can do some simple two track recordings by using the RCA outputs to record drum videos or to listen to my progress:

This is how I had the kit mic'd for a two track recording:

And here's what it sounded like:

Here's a live recording kit with just one overhead:
