Default Help to improve my reading

I've been in drumline for 4 yrs now. My biggest issue now is I need to improve my reading, which is ok but not great. Meaning I have more trouble with the harder stuff that is easier to more experienced readers. Any tips/advice???

Only tip I know is.....practice, practice, practice.

Sorry dude, no short cuts, only repeat practice......the more often you do some sight reading the better you will get.

Your out of school and in college drumline arent you?? How is it going other than reading music.

Relax, have fun and just practice sight reading as much as you can until Aug. Like I said, just hard work no short cuts. Thats the only tip I have to give.

Post some college drum line stuff if you get a chance.

Is it easy for you to recognise and break down short phrases? You're reading single line for snare or multiple lines for multi-toms. Sixteenth notes, 32nd notes and drags and the different ways they can be broken down, certain notes subtracted added and so forth can make it tricky too.

If you can get it, find a copy of a book by this great educator from Victoria, Australia. His name is Alex Pertout, and his book "Sight Reading: The Rhythm Book" might be available where you are, or you might need to order it. Alex wrote this book a number of years ago to help all instrumentalists, not just percussion players. Vocalists could even use this to help develop rhythmic phrasing with a vocal coach. It's still used as an important text by a number of drum teachers in the education system here. Thoroughly recommend it.
