    Question Vocalize rudiments...?

A newbie question, do you vocalize rudiments while practicing them?

I came to ask this as I read that some are named after their sound, like paradiddle (true?).

I don't, but you are correct - many rudiments do sound like their names:

    paradiddle
    ratamacue
    flamacue
    ruff
    etc

Yeah, pataflafla too. A few drummers I know call the paradiddles "Mummy-Daddys/Mumma-Dadda", although personally I don't vocalise rudiments myself.

I vocalize paradiddles by using their name..

    PAR A DID DLE

(Double Paradiddle - this is the double part then insert paradiddle from above)
    R L R L
    DOU BLE DOU BLE

(Triple Paradiddle - Do the same thing as above)
    R L R L R L
TRI PLE TRI PLE TRI PLE
    PDP 5 piece - 12/13/16/14/22

I don't speak it so much as whisper it in my head the first few times. I don't have any systematic names used for memory like others have learned to have. I will however, say 'left-right..' to whatever the pattern is sometimes, especially if i'm stuck on something. It's almost like using the alphabet song more or less.

Just to say. "Mammy daddy" is traditionally the name for a two stroke roll not a paradiddle.

Personally, I don't necessarily think you should vocalise as yo play, (but if it helps, go ahead,) but it will give you an idea of how it should sound.

poodlesdrum, if it helps you in the beginning, then go ahead. You will have to let it go at some point, though, otherwise the vocalizations will hold you back on speed.
