i use metal ones...i love em...they couldn't possibly poke a whole in ur heads...for one thing you hit the side like a stick and even if u did hit straight down on accident the wires are too flimsy to poke through a drum head
I'm thinking of getting a set of brushes, but I'm not sure what ones I should get. I mostly see nylons, but I watched a guy playing with some wire ones that had a lot of snap to them when he flicked them hard. Anybody out there use these metal ones? I'm kinda worried they would put holes in my snare head. I'm curious to see if you like them and/or had any problems with them.

Hey, 1drumbum--wire brushes are the traditional kind, but I've been using Hot Rods for brushes and for stick work. Brushes are cool-sounding, but not only can you shish-kebab yourself with the wires, if you thrash them too much, you can bend the handles and have trouble extending and retracting them. Hot Rods give you a brush sound and you can play them harder than brushes without tearing them up.
Keep the beat goin'...
Thanks Bongobro! Hot Rods are the ones I've actually had my eyes on, but I thought I would get a little feedback before I bought them. Who knows, I might just buy both and figure out what I like better!

It realy depends on the type of song and what kind of music you are playing
if you want something soft and slow then wire brushes work fine.
but if you need more power then you might want to try the hot sticks.
you have to flavor your music to the song and band you're playing with.
lots of luck . phillip latimer
