    Default Cleaning Hoops

Hey guys, as my new snare has arrived (I'm still at work and haven't seen it in person yet) and it has diecast hoops with 24k gold plating what is the best thing I can clean it with? Should I just use the same stuff I cleaned my steel snare drum and other hardware with? Or is there something special/particular I should use?

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.
    Mike.

Gold plating? I'd use Windex and a soft cloth.

Really? I know that the stuff I normally use says 'good for all metals' which includes musical instruments, it works great on my hardware and steel snare an even a cymbal I tried it on but I'm not so sure about the gold plating. I also don't know how clean/dirty they are till I see it properly.

    Thanks for your input.

Try vinegar and warm water ( 50/50) can't see it doing any harm. Would love to see pics of the gold plated hoops cause I think they would look great on my MCX Chestnut Fade.

Gold is immune from chemical interaction - it doesn't oxidize, so either a vinegar or ammonia based solution (Windex) is going to be good for breaking down surface dirt and clearning it up. I say to use a soft, cotton cloth because as soft as gold is (and the fact that it's only a few microns thick) you want to prevent scratching it.

Either of the suggestions are good JSB, and trickg is also right about using something soft to clean it. Just don't use anything abrasive to get that "stubborn" dirt. Gold jewlery is cleaned in a diluted ammonia soak, and even in a sonic bath. But the sonic bath is so that it doesn't get scratched. If you wanted to, I'm sure you could get some jewlers cleaning solution. Just about any store with jewlery would have it. That would clean it up nicely, but then it's more expensive than good ol' Windew, or vinegar and water.

If u mean real Gold plating...dont touch it at all, it is microns thin & actualy rubs off. I think you have Gold toned tinted laqcuer sprayed over polished chrome. It is prone to corrosion & wears off too. UGLY stuff except when new. But its not a good option for drums or as used for car trim details...it always gets ugly & defeats the decorative goal if it become crappy looking. If it is a tinted Laqcuer, a chemical varnish remover will allow you to remove it w/o abrasives so you can preserved the polished chrome beneath it. I already learned my lesson & will only invest into chromed hard wares if not stainless steel.

Gold plating isn't that flimsy - I have gold plated accents on a watch/watchband that I've been wearing for well over a decade. It's still strongly there and believe me, this watch isn't babied at all.

The gold plating on Mapex Black Panther hoops is indeed 24kt gold plating. With the price of gold soaring, I imagine that you're going to have a hard time finding many more of them being done.

    Good afternoon, JSB...
I would advise sending your question to Mapex, I'm sure that they can best advise on maintenance of their product. Lots of decent recommendations above, but I wouldn't want to bet on which one or another is right or wrong, and risk spoiling the hoop.
Just my tuppence worth, hope this helps...
    Have a nice day.
