Neil Peart is 59 today!! Happy Birthday!!
Wow we sure age fast 59 ( I'm 60) and he still going strong. Happy Birthday Neil and many more cause we want you around for a long, long time.
ive tried to play Rush and i cant even come close. i just sat there with my earbuds in with my jaw dropped.
Neil is great!!! If you listen closely to some of there songs he does soem really cool bass drum stuff......
Red barchetta is great sounds simple it isn't. But I think he writes all of the lyrics, so his brain can probably eat the average drummers.
Neil Peart? Who?
Never heard of him....

Well.....THIS definitely has to be added to this thread. Many years ago, Modern Drummer did a series of "Sound Supplement" plastic sheets, included in select magazine issues, which you could actually play on a record turntable. This one is a piece Neil Peart did for the magazine, called "Pieces Of Eight", is which all the parts, from the melody played on a MIDI MalletKat (a kind of electronic marimba, but he put could all sorts of tuned percussion samples on it) through to the other percussion and drums (of course), have been played by Neil himself.

Drumbledore, that's just too cool right there! I really like the way Neil Peart includes marimba sounds in his drumming.

I have a whole digital collection of old Peart/Rush pictures on my hard drive. Been collecting them for a bit.
Also downloaded a video bootleg of Rush on the All The Worlds A Stage tour and WOW!!! Geddys voice was so crisp and Alex was really rockin back then. Neil was just Neil, AWESOME!
Here's on of the pics on my hard drive I thought was cool.
That is a marimba sound coming from a MIDI instrument called a MalletKat. So the origin of that sound is sampled from a real marimba. Neil would have a whole lot of stuff sampled. In a Modern Drummer interview he said that he has stuff like an old fragile Chinese drum and other instruments he'd collect on his travels that would be impractical to actually play with the set, so he and his drum techs naturally would have recorded and made samples of these instruments for their sounds, which would then be triggered by various pads and instruments on Neil's kit (before the current one, Lorne Wheaton, Neil's other long-time tech was Larry Allen, "Pieces Of Eight" was recorded in 1987, when Larry was then his tech).
Various parts of "Pieces Of Eight" have been incorporated into Neil's drum solos since this came out as a flexi-disc supplement from Modern Drummer magazine. It's played on his MalletKat to the left of his drumset.
I have this on VHS...the DVD version of this whole concert might have a few extras, I'd say. Highly recommend it.

Does any one know, does he have his toms tuned up quite high? I just bought his newest DVD and in it, especially when they go to a scene where he is in the backstage room warming up, his toms sounded like they were tuned up quite high

As you may have noticed by my forum name, I'm a huge Neil Peart fan. Because of my long time fan-dome of Neil, my drumming style is very similar to his, after all I've been a fan of his for 37 years so something was bound to come across in my playing.
Last week I picked up the new Rush Time Machine DVD. One thing I have noticed in recent years. Neil's drum solo's have become boring as hell. Ever since he started incorporating his e-kit into his solo they have gone down hill. I'll take the solo's from "All The World's A Stage" , "Exit Stage Left" - his best, and "A Show Of Hands" over the recent boring rhythmic experimental solo's any day. Also enough of the big band crap, it's not his style and he looks uncomfortable trying to play it. Neil is one of the best Prog Rock drummers in the world, he should dance with who brought him. I blame Freddie Gruber. Before him Neil's playing was inventive and raw, yet defined and controlled. After Freddie it seem Neil was no longer willing to take those chances he did before.
If you want to hear the real Neil Peart at his best, sometime when you are alone with no distractions, put on disc 3 from Different Stages Live at the Hammersmith 1978. Sit back and listen, mind blowing. Outstanding Drumming performance.
