History of the US Beat was my first instructional/historical video. The opening solo is mesmerizing. It never gets old. A master technician.....
one of my favorite records to listen to was Captured back in the 80's well the other day I found it on cd in a bargain bin for $5. Man the memories it brings back to hear it again. Looked for video of the show that's on the record and unfortunately I don't think there is any so here's just the audio but still always a worthwhile listen.

he is the reason i love drums
Anyone remember the Zildjian CD that you could get with a cymbal purchase back around 1990-ish? I remember Steve Smith was on that CD and I'd be blown away at his performance on it.

Loved his big kit in Journey.

Im mostly a guitar player..but I love to play drums also. Got me a nice little Jazz Silverstar kit. Sometime I get in a rut or bored....and then today I stumbled upon one of those Steve Smith videos for Sonor. I was just blown away! Of,course I know he is a top player and heard of him for years. My question is what JOURNEY tracks should I see out on his drumming especially? I was never a big fan of Journey. Too poppy for my tasted. They play them on the radio at least two songs every hour the same station..and I just have to change the station! HAHA... Which are his standout tracks in Journey?

Have you ever watched a movie, professional sports event, band, whatever and actually met your hero, only to find out that he's a jerk? It's a huge let down.
Steve Smith fans have nothing to worry about in that regard. He's as good guy as he is a drummer.

nice old vid here. He's playing the Sonors here. Not sure if the snare is Sonor or Yamaha though.

My only Steve Smith story is back in 1978, before he was famous and after his University of Miami schooling, pianist Bruce Hornsby played local clubs in Virginia. In Norfolk, Holiday Inn Scope was across from the big arena where Steve was playing with Ronnie Montrose who was opening for Journey. Steve and Greg Rollie came into the Holiday Inn lounge after their show and Steve sat in with Bruce and his band playing the Miles Davis jazz tune Seven Steps To Heaven. Pretty heady stuff for a Holiday Inn lounge in Norfolk Virginia. Bruce probably remembers but since Bruce wasn't on anyone's radar at that point not sure Steve would remember.
Although Steve Perry's vocals in this song make me want to pound a nail into my brain, it's a fun song to play on drums. Some nice accents.

The fact that this guy actually came up with that awesome beat on dont stop believing tells you he is a drum god.
Its one thing to copy a cool/ complicated drum groove but a whole other story creating it from scratch.
You have to have that certain X factor.
"The fact that this guy actually came up with that awesome beat on dont stop believing tells you he is a drum god."
I'm just trying to remember where I heard that before.
