Marko and JRT,
Thanks for not killing me over this.
rick,
you and i have touched on this topic before and we both agreed different strokes for different folks when it comes to favorites. but even i agree with you here. the absoulute waste of talent to drugs and alchohol is saddening to the point of madness. too many performers that we all admire have squandered thier talent to these dark places. and never mind the countless people we don't know who have passed. the loss to us is sad, to family and friends it's devastating.
i don't think you should appologize for saying he was sloppy due to what he was doing to himself. even i admitted in our previuos posts that near the end he got bad. there's plenty of video to show it. but in the early days i believe he was really a player to admire. and i do admire him. he is my favorite drummer. and more importanly in his death i learned a very valuable lesson, don't tread the same path.
if you let them the even the dead can teach lessons spoken and not.
Marko and JRT,
Thanks for not killing me over this.
Actually Olimpass, it's funny that you had posted this pic. It reminds me of a story I remember reading in Modern Drummer where some drummer was retelling a story (I think it was Dave Mattacks from Fairport Convention) where he went and visited the Bonham family home....at that time John had got (probably for free) from Ludwig a small sized drum set for his son Jason, a young kid at that time, and from what I recall (read this well over a decade ago, so it's a lil' hazy), Mattacks said that the set had a small toms, snare and cymbals and a little 18" kick.(not the one in your pic though, lol). Mattacks and Bonham were just talking stuff when Bonham wandered over to the small set and, according to Mattacks, John proceeded to belt the hell out of it, together with his right foot work, and was making his signature "Bonham" sound out of that tiny set!

Very cool story, thanks for sharing that info Drumbledore.
Yeah I agree that is an interesting story. Let's hear some more if there are any on John.
I think they invented the double bass pedal for one bass drum because of John Bonham...lol
Actually, a company named Faria had a double bass pedal in 1924.
Both pedals were on the same base, so how you would play it is beyond me, but, they had it.
You can see it at Vintage drums.
Wow that sounds weird two pedals side by side must of been tricky to play what I mean you would have to close your legs LOL. Where would you put the snare.
Oli's....did you know the story of how at one time Bonham turned up to a Zep rehearsal with two bass drums (must have been a sight seeing two 26" Ludwig bass drums!) and I think Jimmy said to Bonzo something on the lines of "...err, I don't think there will room on the riser for two of those somehow on our next gig, mate..." which probably gave him the incentive to work more with his single foot? (not saying it did, but one can speculate though...)

Love the 'feel' that John played with. He really grooved that kit
I play, Gretsch Catalina Birch, 7 piece in the vintage sunburst finish.
RIP, Frank. You will not be forgotten. Missing you, mate

Has everyone already heard the album that was making the rounds that was a bunch of Led Zepplin studio tracks with everything muted but the drums? I just recently got my hands on it - it's amazing to hear just Bonham's drums on their own. You can learn a lot from trying to match his feel.

They say,,,,it's da player not da kit ,,,,that makes da drummer....
Drumbledore's pic & story ( yes it was in md a long time ago)
brought that back to mind
"FEEL DA GROOVE & PLAY IT FORWARD..."
"BEAUTY IS IN THE EARS OF THE BEHOLDER ,
ENJOY IT ALL,,, MY BROTHERS & SISTERS"
COMMANDER & CHIEPH OF
"PHROGGE'S AQUARIAN ARMY"
LEGEND IN MY OWN MIND
& FORCE BEHIND DA
"PHX AZ LEGEND OF DA ZYDECO GROOVE VEST"
(AND OTHER TOYZ) INCLUDING PIZZABOX SNARE DRUM
IT'S ALL ABOUT DA SHOW !!!!!
Buddy rich once said "i'm influenced by every drummer i've ever heard"
knowing of mr rich & his personality
he may have as well included the phrase
" good bad or indifferent" but he didn't...
Sometimes what you dont say is just as important
(maybe even more so),,
"FEEL DA GROOVE & PLAY IT FORWARD..."
"BEAUTY IS IN THE EARS OF THE BEHOLDER ,
ENJOY IT ALL,,, MY BROTHERS & SISTERS"
COMMANDER & CHIEPH OF
"PHROGGE'S AQUARIAN ARMY"
LEGEND IN MY OWN MIND
