I loved him in the one song by that one band in that on country. I live on a street named Hendrix if that helps and I love hendrix ever since I was 2 years old

And I'm glad that you did post it Oli my man. 'Twas a sad day for me when Mitch Mitchell passed away. Hopefully Ginger Baker will still stick around for a little while!

I honestly don't know that much about Mitch Mitchell 'as a drummer', other than being part of the Hendrix band.

I know that Ginger Baker has a reputation as being a pretty miserable individual, pretty sour on everything, but I recall seeing at least one clip where he sort of laughed off Mitch Mitchell's abilities, particularly because of Baker's own perception of himself as a 'jazz drummer' primarily. It was pretty apparent that Baker didn't think much of Mitchell's 'jazz' chops. I've never really heard anyone say anything negative about Mitch Mitchell, but curious if anyone else, besides Ginger Baker, ever had anything negative to say about Mitch. Was his fame tied just to his association with Hendrix, or was there more to him? I haven't concentrated on his drumming enough to really have my own opinion.

I wasn't a Hendrix fan but, Mitchell was a helluva drummer.

Baker didn't like anyone who was better than him. I thought he was overrated 30 odd years ago, along with a few others, and my opinion hasn't changed since then.

A lot of musicians, not just drummers, got their "reps" based on who they played with and not on their own merit.

If some of the drummers here, like Rich, Marko, Bish, several others including myself, had played a tour with Clapton, what do think they would be saying about us today.

I watched 1 of Bakers solos the other night. I'll spot him the double bass and raise him 5.

PS: I still would take Cozy Powell over all of them.

    Just a couple observarions:
A lot of drummers played with Clapton, even Hendrix since 1967...and who remembers them?
Don't watch the later, Mitchell, double bass solos...he played better with Hendrix, IMHO.
Baker has a unique style, even tho he's a carmudgen.
I think Powell's best efforts came out with Jeff Beck, God only knows what Baker would have done with Beck's "ice cream cakes!"

Sling, I agree with what you say, but, I wouldn't call Bakers style "unique".

I've seen and heard live versions of Hendrix doing "Fire" on the internet. Some have the regular tempo like the studio version and others like the one below, in my humble opinion, sounds rushed and a bit sloppy but hey...it's classic Hendrix

IMO Hendrix music allowed Mitchell to develop his style and coming from a jazz/blues background certainly helped. Playing "straight 4/4" just doesn't work with the music-he sometimes "swings" with his fills.

heard hey joe the other day and was wow'ed all over again. great feel, great sound. as for mr baker, as much as I like his playing and am amused by his surly nature he was by far and still is one of the more over rated players. its not magic... is it?
