    Default So I'm screwed!

I'm just starting my second year of a drumming Degree at a university in london.

It's compulsory for all drummers on the second year to take drumline class. My sight reading is dare I say, fantastic! But my ability on a snare with proper technique and stuff is awful! I'm a kit player with no experience doing marching stuff.

How easy is the conversion from kit to just snare? And would I have maybe like, THREE DAYS to get good at it?! Or am I what the title of this thread suggests? haha

Good luck man, the good thing about snare is it's all just one note on the sheet.

The only two constants I have are DW and Zildjian.

Sorry to say, but you won't be able to come up to speed in three days - not unless you already know your snare drum rudiments:

    Open double stroke/long rolls - 5s, 7s, 9s, 13s, 15s, etc
    Paradiddles
    Flam Paradiddles
    Double Paradiddles aka paradiddle-diddles
    flam-accents
    Lesson 25s
    Drags
    Ruffs
    Flamacues
    flam-roll figures
    etc.

The good news is that if you already have some basic technique, applying what you know intellectually to the structure of snare drum parts should get you going pretty quickly. It's not going to happen in 3 days, but I can imagine that within a few weeks you can be holding your own.

SK, do you have to be completely proficient to be a part of the class, or is that what you would like to do? With your knowledge of the kit, you might be able to show some basic skills in three days, but to be completely proficient will definitely take a little longer. Have you talked with your professor?

Like what trickg said, you need to have those sort of rudiments down....minimum. In three weeks.....maybe. But I highly doubt in three days.

When I started in high school, our drum teacher, way way before we even touched a kit, he got us doing snare rudiments on pads, snares and other marching percussion (after all, they were going to have a marching band started at our school....that's another story). And whenever I teach kit, I incorporate rudiments one bit at a time until it is natural for the individual player, with an emphasis on being able to start with either hand.

Have you been given any book or sheet of the 40 Rudiments?

And three weeks really isn't enough time to really get them down either - maybe he'll get to a point in a few weeks time where he no longer feels like he's floundering, but there are people who spend lifetimes working on their craft as rudimental snare players, specifically people in the New England states where Fife and Drum is still big.

Quite agree with you there trickg, it is a maybe. Really, you have to practice them daily to know them all, and that's stretching it. I would say it wasn't until my last year in high school that I could honestly say I would be comfortable playing a majority (but notall of them), and 24 years or so down the track every time I need to warm up before practicing other drum exercises, I pull out those same sheets from high school listing them. It's quite meditative for me, by the way. And yes, my first drum teacher was a Canadian guy who played pipe band (back in Canada) as well as a kit player. Awesome guy.

Hmm..it is probably safe to say your screwed and that`s the polite way of saying it..but what the hell, the sun will still rise in the morning. This event is a minute blip in you career playing drums.

    You have three options..

1 Try and bluff your way through it by cramming in as much practise as possible.

2 Hope the teacher is female and she fancies you..You could take her out for dinner and if your that good later when you get back to her place (you know what i mean.!) she mite look kindly on you and give you a pass on the drumming.

3 Realise it`s a lost cause and spend your time relaxing drinking, smoking and watching as much porn as possible but remembering next time to be prepared and to give it your best shot.

    Best of luck anyway mate.

I may try all three of these!

Cheers for the response guys! I truly know it will take a hundred times longer than three days of practice! I was just being flippant haha.

I don't think I need to be the same standard as the blue dragons! But it would be nice not to just be put on the crash cymbal getting one smack every 30 bars!

I've got all the useful rudiments down like:
    Open double stroke/long rolls - 5s, 7s, 9s, 13s, 15s, etc
    Paradiddles
    Flam Paradiddles
    Double Paradiddles
    paradiddle-diddles
    flam-accents
    Lesson 25s
    Drags
    Ruffs
    Flamacues
    ratamacues

but under the scrutiny of a marching band teacher I think I'm going to seem like I've only just learnt them if you know what I mean.

I'll just have to wait and see what happens!

cheers for the great feedback as usual guys =D

I'll keep you posted with how much I fail!

You may find that you play your rudiments better that guys who think they are rudimental drummers.

I did a thing at my wife's school not long ago where the new bright-eyed, bushy-tailed band director wanted players to come in and demo instruments. Since I do both trumpet and drums, I brought in my horn and a snare drum, but I worked for about a week and a half bringing my rudimental chops back up to speed a bit. I was shocked at how quickly I'd lost them, but pleased at how quickly it seemed to come back. I'm still not even close to what I once was though - I just don't put my focus there anymore - it's all put in on the kit, and I don't use a lot of that in my kit playing.

    Good luck dude!

Already said, Be sure of your skills! Rudiments will make you love the set even more, Lots of new idea's come from learning ruds. I would suggest learning 3 basic rudimental patterns, singles, doubles and flam's. All other patterns are just combo's of these three.
Start slow its not a race until class, lol. My favorite pattern is rrl rll r l. These can all be converted to your feet or even a variation of the two. A toast to the ruds!

Good luck man. Snare drum is just rolls and rudiments. If you know at least a handful of them then you have a pretty good chance. I personally wish i had more marching snare knowledge. I'm a kit player who knows rudiments. Not a rudiments player who knows the kit.

I was going to suggest a bit of practice and just relax.

I think you are looking into this too much, you can sight read and play set so I say you be be much better than you are giving yourself credit for.

Let us know how it works out.

Hey guys! Had my first practice thing yesterday, turns out I'm a tenor drummer now! The chart looks pretty complex but I might stick the sheets on my desk so I have to do a tiny bit of practice each night. You're completely right Trickg, all my rudiment muscle memory almost disappeared but it's no longer on the decline. It's all coming back slowly but surely.

So somehow, by some unforeseen force of nature, I am able to play Tenors to an alright level. It gets ropey at parts and I've only learnt the first 32 bars but I got together with the rest of the band and it's all coming on very nicely. The gods have smiled upon me and bestowed me with the drumming power necessary to play the unholy tenor drums.

First off, let me apologize for being late in response to this. I seem to be an on-and-off member.

Second, I sincerely congratulate you on making tenors, especially in the state you were in at the time. They're not easy to pick up, at first (literally and musically), but they'll serve you well.

Last but not least, let me say that "unholy" is quite a strong word. Tenors can very well help you in any sort of drumming, and they are definitely the most fun instrument to play. Just so you know where this is coming from, I'm playing Snare in my drumline at the moment, and I miss playing tenors so much.

Hey guys, thanks for all your responses!

The Tenor drums are very fun! I'm getting on with them better than I could of imagined. I find it easy to remember parts as you can remember the shapes you create more than what stickings and such. I've got two pieces under my belt, in the next couple of months we're thinking about recording our performance. Once we're you know, not really bad haha. I'll let you guys hear it when we do so!
