Default Hot August Night - Neil Diamond

Ok, I'm showing my age here but this is one of my favorite albums of all time. While many people know Neil Diamond through more of his sappy, watered down songs, this album came out when he was young and on fire. Like many favorites, I like it because it's live. The energy is off the map and the mood is captured in how Neil talks to his audience between songs.

The album starts with an incredibly orchestrated prologue that then segways into "Crunchy Granola Suite", a fiery song with growling vocals, anything but what his stereotype has since become. It then proceeds into songs with some of the greatest songwriting of that decade with tunes like "Play Me" and "I am, I said". Other recognizable tunes from that album are "Song Sung Blue" and "Sweet Caroline".

It was recorded at the Greek Theater in L.A. (California for our international friends). Of all of Neil Diamonds recordings, that one is my favorite too Drummer. I love when he talks to the "tree people," who couldn't get a ticket, but they're hanging out in the trees around the outside of the Greek Theater, just to be able to hear the concert. Neil just wanted to know that they were enjoying the show too - classy touch in my book.

Yes PB, "Tree people... can you hear me tree people?" I started to mention that. He treats them with the same respect and it supports the warmth and personal delivery of the concert itself.

You are right about this one! I saw Neil in concert in Lincoln Nebraska where he did the same show as what was recorded on this album. It was a great show!

Who was the drummer on that one. I believe Ronnie Tutt is still his drummer now. One of my favs. He was great with Elvis in the 70s.

Just bumped into this section of the forum. I love the early, non-sappy Neil Diamond. "I Am I Said", "Solitary Man", and "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" are particular favorites. And the "Tap Root Manuscript" LP was awesome.

Saw Neil Diamond in concert many years ago. Very talented and classy performer. It was also the only show I ever went to in a suit and tie.

Hot August Night is an awesome album, to me a longer sequel to Live at the Troubadour from 1970. Always makes me smile. Hot August Night 40th anniversary adds some songs to the set that couldn't be put on vinyl in 1972...too much time.

Another good Neil Diamond live album is Hot August Night NYC.
