    Default G1 over G2

Yes guys you read correctly. I have recently had this setup after continuos experimenting with tuning for that perfect resonance/attack. I don't like my drums to resonate for too long but a high note that cuts through but does not linger for too long. The g2's on the bottom provide this sound. The g1 on top ensures that the drum does not sound too dead and provides the open attack sound. The end result is best described as warm/deep/punchy. Sounds crazy guys but definately worth a try. This setup is on a birch shell on all toms.
I play, Gretsch Catalina Birch, 7 piece in the vintage sunburst finish.

    Shock! Horror! Drum heresy!

Naaaah, j/k mate, that's some good investigating on your behalf. Drum sounds are all about experimentation. I'll have to remember that one.

Makes sense, G1 would be open and, tuned low would give you a nice punch. The 2 ply on the bottom would cut the resonance and give you attack, without having to tune them up high. I'm sure you can get the same result other ways but most people already have a similar combination on their kit. I may just flip a couple of toms over and play with the tuning, see what happens. Credit to you livewire for trying new things.

When I told a mate at work who is also a drummer, I hadn't finished what I was saying and the shock horror on his face lol was a memorable moment. And linchpin is right, this sound can be achieved the 'normal' way. This setup just involves alot less tinkering around.

Someone on another thread pointed out that, because of inertia, a heavier head should resonate longer, once it is vibrating, so you may be on to something.

On my 6" and 8" toms, I switched to G1's top and bottom and, on such small drums, it really opened up their sound, though there wasn't much resonance to lose there, anyway.
