A kick head has a surface area of aprox 380" square. For the average person thats less than 1/2lb psi. Add that to the fact its all going straight down on the too of a cylinder and the chances for damage is extremely small.

That may be true, but you won't catch me standing and jumping up and down on any of mine.

I always save my kick drum batter head changes for July. In July there is a traveling circus that sets up and performs locally. They have an elephant that can stand on its hind legs. I will take my kick drum to the big top in the morning when the elephant trainer is working with the elephant. Her name is Betsy (the elephant not the trainer). The trainer will guide the animal to my kick and prompt her to raise up with her hind legs in a balanced position on my new batter head, seating the head.

    This never happened.

    V funny!

Seriously though there does seem to be a real split on the for and against camp. Like all things in life its your choice as they are your drums.

Huge warning. If you have just had your bearing edges recut, the standing method of seating your head is highly discouraged. On carpeted floors you will punch a hole in your carpeting cookie cutter style. Be very afraid when the wife or landlord notices.

Maybe a little off topic, but he was ITALIAN, like me :D or like my parents anyway, but I still consider myself an Italian, in spirit anyway

Well those Italians do know how to get to the point! Fast and direct.

Ahaha, it was probably a bad idea, but if it works for him: meh

Okay, maybe not stand on it, but you can certainly use your knee when taking the pre-stretch out of your drumhead when doing so. Never had any problem doing that.

I've seen it done, but I am too scared to ruin my drums....those guys have enough money to replace them without problems...most of us don't.

I've been tuning my bass drums the same way for years, have never seen the necessity in stretching it that much.
