PDP ace brass snare 14x6.5 for $75

Always wanted a black beauty, but they are pretty spendy. Ive considered this snare a few times, and read a bunch of great reviews about it. Well the other day (Saturday) I saw one in great condition for $75!!!
well after buying Christmas gifts for the family I was heart broken that I wouldn't be able to afford this snare that sells at a rock bottom price for $270 at mf.
Well Sunday I got a Christmas card from work with $20 in it, and today I found a lady's purse, and she gave me $50 (she left it in a envelope with my name on it, and gave it to my manager, afraid that I would refuse it). So I called the guy expecting it to be sold, and he still has it! I meet him at 9:00am tomorrow, and I'm super pumped!

Anyone have one of these, or played one, that can share their experience? The one I'm getting is the 14x6 1/2.

Well I got it! Looks great. Havent got it home yet. I let you all know how I like it and post pics when I get it home. I know that im going to swap out the wires and maybe the batter. The heads are almost new on it, but the batter is an emperor x. I give it a shot before I replace it. Its going to be my loud rock snare so it might be rad!

Great find Deedubs! That was a definitely a bargain. It seems to me most of the drum stuff I see on CL is grossly overpriced. It's good to see there are still gems to be found.

I put remo legacy LA head as a batter, and remo ambassador snare side on, and some puresound wires. It sounds awesome! Loud, nice big crack! I also put 2.3 hoops on it that I swapped out from a parts snare. It came with real thin hoops that I didn't care for. The thicker hoop also seemed to focus the sound a bitt better IMHO. I'll try and put some better updated pics on later.

Cool. My cousin put Diecast hoops on his because he didn't like it at first. He uses those and a Evans Genera Dry I believe, has a nice low focused punch to it. Sounds pretty good

Die cast would be nice on this snare. I might have to keep an eye on eBay. Although the 2.3 hoops made a big difference, the die cast would prob be best.

The wife got me a dw mag throw off for my ace snare today as a birthday present! It fits! No new holes! To bad the 3 position butt plate doesn't fit the pre-existing holes. Oh well the butt plate on the the ace is real nice. The throw off was pretty horrible though.

Yeah the pacific hoops are not that great. I have a PDP Hammered Brass and the hoops are pretty awful. Hit a good rimshot and the snare detunes a bit. :/

My Artwood has very thin triple flanged hoops. I've considered putting thicker triple flanged or even a die cast on the batter but it sounds great as it is so I'm not sure.

Thanks guys for the posts. I knew that I wanted to change the throw. And I just swapped hoops from one of my other snares, and I liked it. maybe if you can swap from a spare snare marko to see if you like it better.

Hi this is my first post here. I recently got one of these snares as well. I got it cheap off E-bay and noticed how thin the hoops are. I put some Gibraltar 2.3 hoops on it greased the tension rods and added nylon washers, and after reading this thread I put on a DW mag throw off. I put Aquarian reso and Hi-energy with puresound blasters. Now it is an awesome snare. It will make a nice addition to my collection, thanks for the info guys!
