It sounds to me like how I imagine a conga would sound if it had zero tone and resonance.

I read it might be that he's tapping a guitar case with his hands.
Where did you guys see this? cause I don't see a video in this thread to be able to comment.
Its an acoustic guitar.
According to Songfacts site he's hitting a plastic garbage can!

There's controversy on what was actually used, a plastic garbage can, his drum throne, soles of his shoes....according to the book, John Bonham: A Thunder Of Drums, was a guitar case.
There's a controversy over this?
I heard it was his drum throne.
Matt
I like the plastic garbage can idea, and the guitar case thing sounds plausible as well, but i think i'll go for the garbage can route, as the guitar players won't like it when i throw the case off of my lap to get ready to come when the kit part starts...
Thanks for the help..
Back when the band I was in played that song I put a small towel over my 12" tom and it sounded just like what ever is being played in the song.
It is his drum throne. Wish I could find where I saw that.
This is what Wikipedia said about it. And I quote, "There has been much doubt around Bonham's percussions in the background throughout the song, having regard to the particular resonance that it captures. There are no versions consistent in this respect: often mistaken for bongos, some said of a small plastic bin for waste played with the hands from the side of the bottom, others about the sticks on his drum kit vinyl seat pad, or even the soles of the shoes he wore during the recording session and so rhythmically beaten with his drum sticks; the book John Bonham: A Thunder Of Drums reports instead of a hard case for guitar on which Bonham improvised percussion background with bare hands." I guess no one knows for sure, or it's regarded as a secret to guard it's mystique.

I always thought it sounded like fingers tapping on the ball of a microphone.

With all due respect to the outrageous rumors perpetuated in this thread, I happen to be in posession of the actual truth of the matter: John was slapping Jimmy Page. That was the sound at the beginning of "Ramble On". As always, thank you for shopping at Phil's House of Truth.
