    Default Operation: Homemade Kick Pad

This was kind of an impulsive decision. The other day, I started bringing in my kick pedal so I could practice my four way independence easier.

After wasting minutes of my life (minutes that I'll NEVER GET BACK ) adjusting the pillow that I was putting in front of it to use as a "kick pillow", I started thinking of ways I could hook up an old bass drum head/hoop so that it would stand vertically, thus creating a bass drum-like practice implement. A little later, and after deciding that it was an impractical set up, I remembered a design I had seen on a professional kick pad. Being the poor kid that I am, I decided to see if I could build my own.

Here are the results! (It's not pretty...but it works just as good as the professionally made ones)

It's a really simple design. I just screwed together an "L" shaped base, cut an angled support beam, and gave the thing legs for stability. I also glued on a small piece of wood to the front that I could clamp the pedal onto. (In the picture the piece is angled downwards...gravity! That's no longer a problem, though)

Well, that's it. I'm done being proud. If you have any homemade equipment, you're more than welcome to share it and post pictures!

I would put some velcro on the bottom to keep it from sliding, other than that it looks great!

That's a good idea. At the moment, I have left over rubber pads glued to the bottom because I have a hardwood floor. But if those don't hold up, then I'm going to see if I can't find any Velcro to stick on there and I'll just stick it on a rug.

EDIT: After playing on it, I decided the rubber was too loud and too hard so I added a foam pad that I ripped off the bottom of a furniture glider. Now it's quieter, the rebound is more realistic, and the rubber is still there to absorb the shock so I don't get a loud woody sound.

EDIT2: I just noticed that you can see an intact furniture glider under the leg of my desk. :P

Oh my god...I made one exactly like this 4 months ago I swear...I'll post my version of it. Instead of a bouncy pad where the beater should hit I have a pillow because wood is kinda loud. It's alot better then spending $150 on a proper one.

I have an inverted e-kick ( beater goes down ) but I haven't used it since I switched to Acoustic.

    Post it!!!

So after the first project, I felt like I should go all out and make myself something small and portable as a hi-hat practice implement.

INTRODUCING: The "DW 1" hi hat pedal! "The Drummer's Last Resort" (Name for humor purposes only...don't sue me DW!)

It doesn't quite work yet. It needs a compression spring so I can actually step on it and have it come back up, and maybe some tiny finger cymbals where the stopper is to give me a bite-sized "chik". Also, if you couldn't tell, I made the base plates both out of old laminate flooring. Fun fact. lol

This is fun! And I'm learning more about construction and refreshing the few math skills that i have in the mean time.

I hope this inspires people to make their own stuff. And if you do, please post pictures!

ahaha Actually I never took shop. I took a metal shop/welding class in high school, which was the closest thing. Basically I just know how to use a chop saw and a drill. And some common sense mixed in with a bit of patience. :P

Edit: In fact, I've been planning on building custom drums for a while now. I just don't have a job! I've been building these small things with scrap wood I find around the garage. I mean, I built the base plates for the hi hat pedal out of old laminate flooring for crying out loud! haha

But I have all the tools I need to make some stave drums. I just need the time and money.

I did this a few years back, here's a couple pics of my very sloppy attempt. I have just begun to re-use it lately and I might revampt it soon using more of your model.
