..The thread title may sound funny.....I know most of us would love to play music as a full-time career, the majority of us do not.

..Just wondering what profession/job/career you guys are in that allows you to play and enjoy your drums?

    ....let's hear what you do.

I'm a database administrator and DoD contractor. I work in an environment where it's pretty much the standard 9-5 gig, Monday through Friday, and I'm lucky enough to not have to be on-call, which is pretty rare as a DBA.

Basically, my evenings and weekends are mine. There is the normal juggling I do with my two teenage kids and the typical homeowner honey-do's, but otherwise I get to play quite a bit. Right now I am kind of running the sub circuit for local praise bands in the central Maryland area, and I started playing with an indie/original band in November, and the band has its first show with me in the drum seat coming up on February 12th.

Well, I used to be a chiropractor, and that kept me very busy. I was also busy raising a family, so there was no time for music, except to listen. Now, I am a pastor and it gives me more flexibility in my daily schedule. I have also raised the kids, and I am proud to say that they are out on their own and doing very well. I am also divorced, so I have been single for the past 12 years, and that frees me up to do whatever I want with my time.

The last church I served did not understand my desire to play music (well, in fairness, I think they were ok with the guitar, but the whole drumming thing was too much for them). The current church embraces my desire to play - both guitar (which I play weekly in service), and drums (which I play as part of a band formed by pastors in my area). The band practices at my house in the music room/basement, so it is especially convenient for me, and since I have most of the equipment that we need, others don't have to worry about dragging gear back and forth each week. The band will do it's first "gig" at a youth lock-in event February, so I'm really looking forward to it. Just went through a hernia surgery yesterday, so hopefully I'll be cleared to carry the things that I need to carry. Otherwise, I may have to hire my first roadie! LOL

Yeah, I didn't want to make any big deal out of it. I figure we all have different things that we deal with every day. After you get past the signing of the anesthesia form that says you could die, it really was a pretty simple surgery, as far as surgeries go. Thank you for your prayers, and I was told by the nurses that I was an "A' patient, so I'm sure the recovery will go well.

    Good evening, all...

Perhaps luckier than most, when I bought my first 'real' kit (mid-70's...) I allowed myself to play drums because I was paid to..! OK, not very much (not superstar status...), just a variety dance band, playing around western France. Once married, I got work in a music shop (electronic technician...), and played most week-ends for weddings and functions as a duo, with occasional stand-ins. I'm now an IT manager for an aluminium foundry, starting to think about retirement; old age started creeping up, so my current playing is limited to weekly practice with the family pop/rock band (two sons plus two buddies...); we go public between 6 and 10 times per year, for private events, or charity gigs. It would be difficult to beat our tariff (0€; we don't do it for money, which enables us to choose where and when we play...) Next gig: end of April, a benefit concert for an ill kid. We have an excellent chum running a modest PA enterprise, who does the sound for us when we're 'out', and we're treated like royalty. Modesty prevents me from saying that we deserve it (but we do; we're pretty good..!). Over all these years, I think I've more than paid for my kit (still the same, still going strong...). I'm glad I invested in Camco...
    Have a nice day.

For the longest time I worked in retail management, which has about the most inconsistent/inconvenient schedule you could get. That combined with starting a family and raising two kids- there was NO time for the drums. Not much space either. However for the last 5 years I've been a Business Development Manager for a Medical Consulting company- 9-5 plus work from home perks. This plus the kids getting past the toddler stages is really what allowed me to get back behind the kit. I started practicing regularly, and then in the last 18months started looking for other musicians to play with. Now I'm back in a band, with weekly practice and monthly (give or take) gigs. It's been so beneficial for my soul- I forgot how therapeutic playing can be!

I lost my job in carbide manufacturing Jan 2010. 12+ years of mostly 7a-3p, Mon/Fri. Between some overtime, and other hobbies (cars & bikes) allowed me a certain amount of time to play. Fast forward to today, full-time Engineering student, working Saturdays, for gas $$, and playing out 2-3 times a month. Playing out does put a little jingle in my pocket, but really pays for our nite out and consumables. (Sticks & heads) In all reality, it is a great stress relief from the hell of Physics & Applied Geometry. HAHAHA!

I'm a university student / IT contractor, study comes first so I take contracts only when I feel like it/need cash for something. Non-standard hours for uni so I can generally make time to play everyday. Mostly. In my final year of uni so might have less time to play this year due to workload.

I am a senior loan officer for a mortgage company. I have been doing loans for 11 years now. No set schedule but I am always at work. With the way the business is today drumming is a stress relief for me lol. I only wish I had started years ago.

I've only ever done 9-5 office jobs but it was my brother moving out of home (and me moving back there) that has allowed me to start drumming at the ripe old age of 38. Good job my Dad is cool!

I work as a Firefighter/EMT. I used to work the whole 24 on and 48 off until I moved over to the Administration side. Now i do inspections, scheduling and hop on the booboo bus if an extra person is needed. It is a 9 to 5 gig, so evenings and weekends is pretty much when i get to work on my chops.

Took a flyer about '73, '74, with a band that had very good management. Kept us booked roughly 10 months a year.

Never looked back and retired comfortably.
