    Question Bass Drum Practice Pad

Anyone have experience with bass drum practice pads?

I'm considering adding double bass to my setup and I'd like to get some practice away from the kit wherever I am. In reading the reviews of the ones from Gibraltar, Evans, etc, most people say they don't feel realistic and they aren't large enough to support two beaters.

Anyone roll your own bass drum practice pad with plywood, etc.?

    I'm interested in your experiences.

I made my own a few years back using wood and neoprene for the "head." It doesn't feel much real, but gives a little feedback. I just started using it again, and will probably re-build it backwards so it doesn't wobble as much with a back brace, and add another layer of neoprene so it gives more of a rebound. I've seen much better ones, but here's a couple pics.

I have this one. It holds 2 beaters fine. I think as far as feel goes, it is a little lacking, but I have noticed that it works well for me.

I wonder how quiet it would be and how it would feel if you were to take an old crappy bass drum, something really small like maybe from a junior kit, and fill it with expanding foam. That might make a cool practice kick.

You could also put your double bass drum pedal against the wall, that's what I did

Good for chops... Bad for drywall.

How did you attach it to keep it from moving?

Do you have any sandbags lying around? They make a good counterweight, among other things. With something nice and sturdy to keep it from moving around, you're set. You could also try packing some old stuff into a cardboard box, that also works well.

Good stuff. Thanks, everybody. I do have a bass drum from a junior kit my son no longer needs so that's another idea I had not considered (filling it with heavy comforters to deaden the sound). Now I have at least 3 viable options (wife won't let me drum the wall , ha).

I have one I use with a double bass pedal . I couldnt tell you about realistic feel except that whatever i do on the pad I can do on the bass. its great for getting practice while watching tv etc. if you put the 2 spikes down and have it on a carpet it wont move. only downfall I have to switch the pedals back and forth from the drum to the pad. I cant afford 2 double eliminators lol.
overall i like it hope this helps
