Stage custom is actually quite good - I play one at my church - it has quite a nice tone to it, rather deep, even for smaller sized toms.

First of all, Drums Rock, Let me say welcome to DrumChat. Always good to have another drummer around the place! Please go to the newbie initiation thread at your earliest convenience. I'll be fun for you, and fun for us!

As to my opinion on the Yamaha Stage Customs, I think they are very good drums. I recently bought a new set myself, and I considered the Yamaha Stage Customs, the Sonor Force 3005 - maple, and the Gretsch Catalina - maple. For me, as I made the rounds checking out the sound of the different sets, I found that I loved the sound of the Gretsch Catalina set in the maple. It was too good of a deal, and too good of a sound to pass it up.

That is about my ears, though, and you should check out the sound for yourself, even though your music teacher recommends them. Whatever you choose, it has to sound good to you.
