I got this old 12"x22" 1960 Sligerland bass drum thrown in on a deal when I bought a bunch of stuff from a CL add. It was really rough, cracked wrap, small hole in the side, bent tension rods, hoops were in good shape just needed sanding and gluing in one place where one had seperated. . The rest of the lugs and claws cleaned up really nice. I put it aside and recently decided to restore it and build a vintage kit around it. I put out a message on another forums wanted to buy section and came up with a 1965 9"x13" tom and a 16"x16" 60's floor tom. After running down lugs and some other parts I prepared the shells for wrap and just finished up the kit. It sounds great and think it is one of, if not the most beautiful kit I now own.

You did a fantastic job on the Slingies they look great and I love the finish. Congrats you must be proud of yourself man.
WOW SUPERB job! Very impressive. Love the rap. I bet they do soudn great. Am curious, if I may ask, how much $$ total was expended from start to finish?
Look better than new, I bet! But...12"x22"? Got to be the skinniest BD ever.

Wow!! Excellent work, they look great. Impressive work.
Actually the 12"x22" is just 2" thinner than the regular 14"x22". It is not odd or anything when I sit and play. Sounds just as deep. Maybe a little punchier.
Camco made a bass that size back in the day. and Yikes I just added up everything. The big item was the wrap. $238.00 and the second were the 2 13" and 2 16" Stick saver hoops and 20 tension rods. $93. 16 lugs from ebay for the floor tom with shipping 30.99. 13" tom from a guy in Muscle shoals for $10. Floor tom shell $65. Got the Bass drum in a deal when I bought a snare drum. Basically free. $3.99 for the Slingerland decal. $38 in shipping charges for the toms. I had all the heads or robbed some from another set I was not useing, So I have around $480 in the set. This was over a 7 month period. I won't be doing it again any time soon. I would think I could get my money back out of it and then some?? . but I like it and going to keep it. I am going to sell my PDP's to hopefully cover the cost or most of it. I used my PayPal account to pay for everything from stuff I sold I had around the house. I actually made $460 on one drum that was given to me. A old 8"x12" Slingerland early 40's Radio King tom with calfskin heads. I sold it to a guy on ebay for $200 and USPS destroyed it so he sent it back to me and thank goodness I had insured it for $200 so I got that and USPS never asked me for the damaged drum, so I seperately sold all the lugs, muffler, one undamaged rim,and one undamaged head for $260. so I look at it as a almost break even deal.

Velly in-terlesting...you made money from the postal service!
My Slingy BD is 14"x22" and also "punchy" so I wondered about your 12." Kinda makes you wonder why BDs as a whole are getting deeper! Mine is outfitted with a SuperII, tight batter and a ported, single ply Remo res. and I love it!

The 12" deep works great when the amp backline is right on you and you run into the pain of not hearing your drums. That 12" deep will give you a better slap back and you loose nothing as far as throw. When you add size your gaining volumn and in some cases loose alot of focus and tuning ability. A 14x22 works as good or better than a 16" deep and the same for a 12" in comparison to the 14"! Drum sizes have become more of a "styling" than actually knowing how the sizes sound in comparison to one another.
VIbes; if you can look for a 10" / 12" / and 14x14 in the 3ply shells you'll have one hell of a Slingerland Family there!! Nice job! Doc.
I love seeing restorations. Something about an old worn out item getting a new life. Well done. She's a beauty.

Thanks for all the nice comments, makes my wallet hurt a little less.
Yes, I thought about maybe adding another floor tom. I have another early 70's 3 ply 9"x13" tom that is really nice. Just shells, no hardware. I was going to use until I came across the 65 tom. I know a guy who has a 3 ply bebop 60's Slingerland shell set for sale. The price is right too, would be cool to have that 18" bass drum. The 14" floor tom and 12" tom would fit right in. Could mix and match for all type set up's.

Ya I think its a mistake, of companies to not make/offer shallower kick drums. My guess is the big deep bass drum is somehow attaching itself to 'modern' pop music. I hear lots of descriptions of 18 x 22, 18 x 24, 18 x 26 bass drums as "real cannons" .... so clearly there is demand there from drummers.
Wow! Nice job!!!!
I know you'll enjoy those!
Take care and seeya!
Jim
Sweet project. Is that an old speedking in the background of the firs pic? Or a new one? Does it have the speed king squeak?

Yes, that is a old WFL Speed King I got with the Bass drum. I took it apart and cleaned it up too. Works fine. No squeak. and Doc, I will ask the guy about the shells. Of course I may grab them while I can and hold them until I can finance a restore.

BE COUNTED!
I'm thinking I could really dig a 12" deep bass drum. Surely a custom drum maker could make that.
all the best...
you gotta be kidding me!
thats one fine restoration you did.
scrolling through the pics i was expecting to see a roached out kit and behold you have a gorgeous kit!!!! well done.
Well done VIbes! I can't say much, other than what has already been said, so I'll just say that the resurrected Slingys look beautiful!
