Default Mounted Guiro and Percussion Set Up

Been looking for a way to do this for a while and I finally found the tool for the job! My Guiro is mounted. I bought a no-name percussion stand for £30 incl postage.

I have also set up whatever spare stuff I had for a percussion area. It's a work in progress and no doubt will be changed around a lot. I'm lookin to add some blocks and bells, chimes and whatever else I come across that I fancy. I 'll probably move the position of the stand and add a cowbell I have to the rods that extend below (its designed to hold four pieces, 2 up top, 2 down below).

You'll have to excuse the mess of the room. Half of it is my bits and pieces for drum gear and the rest is all sorts of stuff that get put in there and forgot about. I am slowly taking the room over though - slowly slowly catchee monkee.

Hey Sticks! Yeah, I used to do the same sort of thing.....except then it mean I had nothing to add my cowbells onto! Lol. So my solution that I hit upon was this.

Pearl make a type of 'headed' tambourine called a 'Tombourine' (or some name like that) that are available in 8" & 10" sizes. I bought an 8" one, then ended up not using it for a while. Now the nifty thing about these are that they have a holder whick allows you to keep the 'tombourine' mounted (called that because you can actually get a nice timbale or tom sound with jingles added, if you say hit it with a rod or stick), or you can remove it to shake it and hit with your hand like a conventional tambourine. However, if you have a look at the mount.....

and then see how the 'tombourine' mounts on it...

you can then see that its quick and easy to place the mount on any type of rod which will then make that guiro nice and easy to grab.

I like. Simple yet efficient. Not so much a mess as a creative arrangement, I like to say.

Love your percussion set up Drumbledore, I was checking the thread with the gong you added and I think that is where the inspiration for my percussion area comes from (and watching Ed Mann with Zappa on the Baby Snakes DVD!)

I like the tombourine, they seem similar (in looks) to a pandeiro, but I have no experience of these. Does that mount hold a normal tambourine as well? It looks like it would.

Does your guiro sit quite tight on there, so you can play it without holding it? Or do you always pick up to play? The reason I wanted mine mounted was so I can play it while doing something with another hand - I'm not really sure how easy it is to play that way?

I was thinking with one hand playing guiro, t'other playing crosstick on snare and my feet busy with cowbell and maybe cabasa (expensive tho, the foot operated ones!) I could get some nice rhythms going.

Really appreciate you taking the time to post mate! I find the hardware aspect the most difficult thing when it comes to buying drum stuff. So many different ways to mount things sometimes (and it can get expensive for some bits). It's always good when I am introduced to a new piece of kit I haven't seen before and the ways to use it. I'll add one of those tombourine mounts to my want list.

Stick clicker, are the pegs on your mount tensioned side to side for support, or does the guiro just resting on it through finger holes? good idea as long as it does not rattle!

Marty, I pulled the L-arms as far apart as I could once the guiro was on and the guiro is pushed down until the rods touch the inside. So far I seem to be able to play it without it coming loose.

I found out yesterday that Meinl do a guiro holder and I have ordered one. I'll post pics when I get it.

Here it is guys, one Meinl Guiro holder!

I have changed the position in the room and added a Beat-Root foot tap thingy.

It is made of Beech and has two chambers inside with pick-ups and then runs into an amp. Turn down the highs and up with the lows and use heel or toe to tap either chamber for something to provide that bass thud!

It's not too bad, ideal for solo guitar playing too. I'll post up a video demo when I have got a bit more used to it and played with the amp settings.

    Here's a birdsye view.

and one with the Leem combi amp it goes into.

Fun to play, and I can play pretty quietly on this set up too. I like playing the guiro, while cross sticking the snare and tapping the Beat-Root. I'm just working on getting some "tom fills" with bongos at the moment. I do play them with the hands too and drop down to the snare, even hit the 602 too with my hand.

Looking forward to adding more stuff.

    Chimes
Blocks (I like the wooden ones from Pearl)
    El Negro Cowbells from Pearl
    Mounted Cabasa

and I need some cymbal mallets - anyone recommend any good makes?

The LP mic claw is an awesome mount for the LP Super Guiro. The guiro clips to the mic mount through the finger hole on the bottom of the guiro. I'm assuming it will work well with any guiro that has the finger holes. Clips securely to drum/conga rims or trap table

That "thing", my man, is called a "sasara" or "binzasara" I believe. I seem to remember it from an LP percussion catalogue that I had around the place years back (which actually might be sitting on one of my bookshelves still). It's a Japanese name, and it's suppose to imitate the sound of falling wood blocks or dominoes. Actually in the LP catalogue from what I recall misnamed it a "kokiriko" (which has kind of stuck) and really, the kokiriko is a pair of wooden sticks. If you happen to have seen Japanese kabuki theatre or even visited a Zen meditation temple, you'll see quite a few interesting percussion instruments besides taiko drums in Japanese music, usually wooden percussion clappers or blocks and various types of gongs and bells, all with particular types of pitches and purposes.

Nice. I have a guiro mounted to my set too, but its a stupid hand type thing, and it doesn't have any holes except at the open end. I'm thinking of drilling a hole in it and mounting it, because currently I have it jammed between my mounted bongos, cowbell and tamborine. It's a strange set up.
