    Default Gong bass drums?

Does anyone here have experience with gong bass drums? I was thinking about converting my 18x16 floor tom into a gong bass of sorts, and mounting it to either my left or ride side. It sort of isn't being used much as a floor tom because I have a 16x16, so I thought it would be neat to make it into a new sound and I could play certain song parts more easily. I want it to sound like a kick, not too boomy but some good thump and attack. I figure an 18" would be easier to position, I just don't know what kind of attachments/rodsizes/hoops you need. I have a Pearl Icon rack, if that helps for information purposes.
    Thanks!

A true gong drum has a larger head than the drums diameter, in order to do that you would need lug spacers to raise the lug higher off the drum and a hoop the size of the head you are using. Otherwise you could take off the bottom head and lugs and make a concert tom.

And here's one that gives audio clips of a gong drum with different heads, to help your thinking, at least with one manufacturer, on that end of things...
