I bailed on the idea. Set up the kit at the gig and realized it wasn't worth the effort so went to my normally mild tilt.

I did use the kit asa 2 up 2 down config for the first time live. I have tweak it so the 16 isn't so far back but I was surprised by how easily I could play it. Of course I can guarantee that I overused the two floor toms!

Sounds great. It is mostly about what is most comfortable, after all is said and done.

    flat is where it's at!

if you ask a drummer what time it is?!? they're likely to respond with a time signature "oh, it's 4/4"....

The best idea I've seen on the thread yet. Just set them thwe way you're used to setting them. I can't imagine there's any signicant diff between flat and angled, sonically or "ergonomically".

BTW I have my 1 up angled at approx 10 degrees towards me. It seems just perfect for rolling to from the snare which is about an inch or so lower than the top rim of the tom. But I'm dealing with an 18 bass on a lifter which makes it just shy of 20".

    all the best...

You can still get away with flat floor toms pretty easily though, it's a little different trying to adapt with rack toms though. When I tried to set mine up like that I kept hitting the edges tons of times, I think you need really good posture to make it work!

I don't think I am being clear. Obviously your drum can be in any position and have the same bounce. My point was more of, if you aren't hitting the tom head on, you aren't getting the full bounce. So if your toms are at a super high angle and you are striking the toms at a weird angle, then you are missing some bounce.

wow i didn't even know they were putting die cast hoops on floor toms!. Thoses things are MASSIVE. Because of the hoops I think to get what you want you may need to either raise the throne or set all the toms extremely low to clear the hoops. Or a little bit of both

Moving onto a stand I could lower it but it maintained a distance from the bass drum, effected by the curve of the drum. The lower it went the more to the left it went. Hence, pushing the 10" and hats further left than I cared for. Especially when using two floor toms. My fat old waste won't spin that far that fast.

I solved the layout issue with a 20" bass drum. My 22" kits are now abandoned.

Another option was to just use the 10" since it's depth was already shallower than the 12" tom. That isn't always the best option, IMHO especially if I'm looking for a deeper sound. But in the end I don't care for a flat tom. I like a bit of tilt. I can work with a flat floor tom though.
Also, I have found it helps alot to offset your kick to the right a bit.

It's amazing what a hot button issue this actually is. After playing around with it I realized what KG just posted. Why bother if there's no issue. So they are back at around 30 degrees with no ill effects on my playing.

I know right? 3 pages of it. If you want your toms flat, raise your throne so your hitting DOWN on the toms. If not angle them to the degree that's comfortable for you. If there at a 30% then that means your sitting in such a way so that you will striking them dead on and evenly as well. No one would put their toms at such an extreme angle that there would be no rebound action anyways.

Rebound has nothing to do with angle of the deum relative to the floor. Rebound is soley affected by head tension.

That's what happens on the innernet. I say blue, someone else will say red. That's what's cool.

I don't know how you guys are able to do fills with the rack toms set flat. It seems like it wouldn't work that well or be uncomfortable unless your sitting really high.

Your angle is just like mine. Of course, I've never measured it with a protractor or anything LOL, but I'm guessing about a ten degree tilt.

    all the best...

I like my toms as flat as possible, strictly for looks. I'm as much about looks as I am about playability.

Killer kit dude. Tama SuperStars? Gorgeous. But, honestly the only way to get em almost completely flat is to get a seperate tom-mounting rack. However, it may alter the distance apart from your floor toms. That's how I have my bands setup. The 12 is on its own mount and to the left of the bass, lowered almost to snare-level. LITTLE HIGHER, maybe 3-4 inches. and my ride separates my rack and floor, above my bass.
