How close is the mic to the playing area? You might not have the problem again if it's kept no closer than the edge of the rim.

Just the head of the mic was over the drumhead, but I was playing one of those long, fast, fills and got a bit overzealous on the first 8" tom strike. Now that I know how to replace those heads, all I have to do is get it done.
