While yard saling, i picked up this gibraltor rack practice pad kit for $40.

here is what I am doing with it. The Pearl Tom arms are tedious to get into position.

Oh yeah, I got one of those racks years back. Gave the pads to a deserving student after making sure they had some stands to go with them, then kept the rack. Got it from a Cash Converters store. I use that or a spare Alesis DM5 electronic kit rack to organise a few percussion set ups.

Powder coated, paint would not last a day.

Going to coat all the boom arms, stands and yes the feet. All chrome will be dealt with, but that is also making this a slow build. Need to buy some more mounts too.

Very cool idea..powder coating expensive? I only saw one other kit that had black powder coated Gib tubes at a show and it was during the backline set up.

Yeah I can see your point about paint not lasting a day. The kit in this pic looked like it played its fare share of shows but the powder coating still looked pretty good considering the wear and tear its been through.

Can be expensive. I do my own, so cost of powder, hydro, an old stove to bake the parts, and a gun kit from Eastwood. All the lugs and hoops are powder coated translucent blue over the chrome and all the tension rods are black. It is just very time consuming. Only so many pieces can fit in a standard house oven. It is toxic, so do not use your mom's oven kids.

Is it possible to scuff up the chrome and put some bluing on? I don't know much about bluing. Just a thought.

Nice score. I love my home made racks.
Question... Those "T" clamps holding your crossbar over your kick... Are those the plastic, "Roland-type" clamps? They sure look like it to me.

If so, don't trust them with that much weight. I've broken several, over the years, with just my e-kit on 'em. They are not very strong, especially under a lot of stress. I would end up replacing them with with Gibralter ones.

Good luck with the build. It's lookin' like it's gonna turn out nice. I love the way the drums turned out, by the way. I meant to comment on your thread about them.

P.S. 1 1/4 inch EMT (electrical conduit) is the same exact size as all round, tube style racks. (Gibralter, Tama, PDP, etc.) ALL clamps will fit and it's really cheap at your local hardware store, in case you want to expand or try different configurations. You can buy a handheld cutter for like 15-20 bucks, that'll last forever, too.

P.P.S. Can't wait to see more pics.

Thanks Perry, no they are the drum version Gibraltors. I bought half the mounts separately, but they are all the same grade.
As for the 1 1/4 conduit, the bar size is 1 1/2 and I bought several sections at metal supermarket. It is pretty heavy guage, then I wire wheeled clean and powder coated black. I have a 10 inch chop saw which is only used to cut steel/aluminum.

Kaazamski: I am not familiar with the bluing technique. My lugs and bass drum spurs and hoops are powder coated blue right over the chrome, just a good cleaning with metal prep is all that is required.

I have seen some spray bomb stuff which can be sprayed over chrome. As with any over the top surfacer, the devil is in the prepping, making sure no finger oil, sweat residue, dirt or grease is remaining. A good surface clean is essential for any coating.

Pastor bob, your critic always appreciated, and yes, I guessed well when I decided to do the black, it did work well with the blue. Originally I was gonna do the stands in blue same as the lugs, but I got to thinking it would be Blue overkill.
