You're making me hungry.
So, I have recently become very interested in cymbal modification, and while I was reading up on methods and such, I saw someone suggested soaking cymbals in salt water. So I took my wuhan 10" splash (fantastic cymbal btw, and cheap) of my set, whipped up a bowl of salt water (I used a mix of iodized, Kosher, and Sea salt) and set my cymbal in the bowl. I left it there for 2.5 hours, bell side up, and then took it out. Immediately it sounded darker and more complex, but as I played a bit on it it started to lose a bit of the darkness. so, currently I have it sitting in the bowl bell side down because I noticed that the patina-ish finish that it left on the cymbal was only present on the upside, so I turned it around to give it a bit more patina-esque finish on the bottom. Wich should make it a bit more complex and a bit darker, in addition to making it wobblier. Overall it was Totally worth doing and gave my bright sounding splash a darker sound, suitable for jazz, (and anything else for that matter, it sounds fantastic!)
TL;DR Soaked cymbal in salt water, now it sounds delicious.

Glad you got what you wanted out of the cymbal gretschfan. Is there any way of being able to control the exact amount of change (like how much salt, and how much time in the solution)?

My choice of words did not reflect what I really meant.
I was just thinking that, within a couple of days, you may not like the overall results as much?
I have a so-so ZBT ride that came with my older kit. I am working near the seashore this week, so I may walk at low tide, tie my ride to a mooring, and wait until the tide recedes... I hope I don't make the local paper!

I think If you leave it in the salt water for a shorter amount of time, and wipe the salt off after you take it out, that would probably lessen the effect by stopping it from oxidizing further.

So have we all been spending thousands for nothing to get the right sound?

I prefer mine with pepper, lol.
Actually, I've heard of people doing all sorts of methods to darken the sound of cymbals, from burying it in the ground to 'accidentally' spilling liquids, ketchup, and other things in order to build up a patina. A first that I've heard of treating it with sea salt though.
I'm like Drummer though. Now I feel hungry.
