I love to listen to Latin music, but I have a hard time finding it when I really don't know any of the artists. What are some great Latin bands that would appeal to a drummer? I'm also looking into more funk music too, so if you have suggestions for that, or even Latin Funk bands, that would be great.

Start with guys like Santana and Tito Puente. Even the Latin-funk guys will tell you that. And on a slightly different angle, for Latin rock guys you can't go wrong with Mana. These are but the small tip of a very large iceberg when it comes to Latin and fusions of Latin music, so to speak. I'm still discovering and listening to it.

There's an album David Byrne from Talking Heads did ages ago with a bunch of Latin players called "Rei Momo".....it might be a bit hard to find but I'm sure you can probably get it on import somewhere. Anyway, what's great about it is that not only do you get the song titles, but each song's been described by it's particular rhythm, like cumbia, mambo and so on.

Who I've been listening to of late is Bellita Y Jazztumbata ( "Y" means "and"....after a while, if you don't speak or understand a little bit of Spanish, don't worry, you'll be picking it up as go along in no time, lol), Arturo Sandoval (althought he'd be more on the jazz-Latin side of things, rather than funk), Bad Boys Batucada, Santana of course (really, check out his older stuff, not just the stuff he's been doing of late) and Ozomatli.

Cool Re: Recommend Me Latin Music?

You might dig back a little further (like about 50 years or so further back) to pick up some of the "Cubop" music played by Dizzy Gillespie; he was probably the first popular jazz musician to incorporate Latin drumming in his recordings.

Mongo Santamaria is probably the breakout conga player of the 1960's; his 1963 cover of Herbie Han****'s "Watermelon Man" was one of the first Latin jazz tunes that really caught my ears as a young boy...

Another good "roots" artist to examine is Perez Prado. Don't let the "pop" stuff like "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" or "Patricia"--they were the two hits for whom he was noted in the '50s--throw you. "Mambo Jambo" and "Mambo #5" are classic examples of the Latin music most people heard first, then built upon.

Good luck! (And they're fun to play along to.)

keep the beat goin' ... Don't keep it to yourself!

Cal Tjader is Latin Jazz equivalent to Miles Davis is for Fusion. Many of the greatest percussionists of their day graced Tjader's band. My favorites included here are Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, Armando Peraza, Poncho Sanchez, and Airto. Most of these performers are on many great recordings with Tjader and others.

Anything with Cal Tjader's percussionists is worth checking out. (for the most part)

    Enjoy!

Probably one of the biggest bands in the Spanish speaking world, Mana. They did this song with Carlos Santana. If you happen to get the chance to play with Latin musicians, believe me, they'll love you if you can play this song well, I'm telling you that from experience, having done this with two bands now.

This is also a Latin "standard", a pretty fast tune too. "Mas Que Nada" is Brazilian Portuguese for "But that's nothing" or "No way, come on." Written by Jorge Ben, it's Sergio Mendes' signature tune.

...and speaking of bossa novas, this you definitely have to learn "Girl From Ipanema", an absolute must in your Latin repertoir. I was trying to find a good version of this where you can clearly hear what the drumset can do on this when I stumbled across this version by Diana Krall. An interesting take lyrically and musically.

frustrating this is, the video cuts out before she announces who the drummer is!
