The intro to Hot For Teacher is insanely difficult. Alex is amazing. He reminds me of a more modern John Bonham. I think he's just as good. That's one of the pictures I like! His new kit has a custom finish only produced for him (at least that's what I read).

Man, that is an amazingly beautiful set up hey. Everything in its place nice and neat.
He really loves his 2 bass drum set up (one in front of the other) for the main double kicks.
There must be a good reason to do so as he's done it since i can remember.
I wonder if he slides a mic in between them or someting maybe??

I heard he likes it because it gives the bass drum a more punchy sound. It looks cool, but some drummers would call it silly and impractical. I think it's awesome.

Hehe most of his kits are, to a certain extent, silly and impractical but who's gonna tell him?

Seriously though, he's a monster player - plain and simple.

Amazing!! A truly magnificent sight, a kit deserving of a showman like AVH. Really like what they did with the lighting in that shot too, it didn't completely blanket the kit but it offered a nice contrast. Sorta sparkly.

His kits are silly and impractical. But they sound and look amazing! I agree, it has a cool lighting effect. They look like some sort of reflective gray color.

Thats not the 1984 kit I was thinking of. I was thinking of the disco ball finish kit with the arbiter flats toms. Its in the Jump and Panama videos

these kit pictures are so cool. I still have that classic poster of the black and white striped kit. Bought a second one because the first one was put on so many walls it fell apart.

His Monsters of Rock kit was pretty nice. I think it's in the other Alex thread. Just plain white huge quadruple kicks kit with a ridiculous amount of cymbals. Saw that tour at Candlestick. It has got to be the coolest feeling to go up in the air and at the end of your solo have all the pyro go off!

Yup, AVH is definitely under rated. I'm sure that part of it is being overshadowed by Eddie and all of the frontman drama over the years. I think that part of it may be the era that he came from. It's easy for somebody to lump him in with the 80's big hair, huge kit, can barely play drummers if you don't know any better. It's unfortunate that more people don't listen with a critical ear. The albums were clearly mixed with guitar and vocals as the focal points, but there's some mighty tasty stuff lurking beneath the surface.

He actually uses roto toms, not the flat toms. The only reason I know is I have the exact same set of roto toms, made by Remo.

Yes, Hang Em' High is too hard for me to play. He absolutely rocks on that song. I like the simpler drumming on Secrets too. It's not only how good he is, but how unique his kit sounds. Thick and punchy is how I'd describe it.

I forgot about the Monsters of Rock kit, that's another insane one!

I don't think he's underrated at all. Frank Beard (ZZ Top) is underrated! Now that's a cat that can groove and sit in a pocket.

    all the best...

Don't think he's underrated. Just think he is irrelevant when it comes to discussions about top drummers. Wasn't innovative. When you break down most of the stuff that he did that is thought to be hard, it really isn't all that hard. He provided a good driving beat and fit the music that they played. Would have loved to have been in his shoes and done the things that he's done. He lived the dream.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that's a bit harsh don't you think bro?
How can you call him that after all the tasty grooves and moster double kicking he's done over, what, the last 40 years?
How could you entertain the idea of calling him irrelevant? Seriously?
You may as well call Eddie VH irrelevant when it comes to discussions about top guitarists too.

Lawl @ irrelevant. He's one of the defining rock drummers of the entire era, very very influential.

He is not relevant in a discussion of history's top drummers. Eddie VH is one of the best guitarist ever. Doesn't make his brother one of the best drummers ever. That arguement doesn't hold water. Apples and oranges my friend.

Defining? Really? Elaborate. When you ever hear discussions about "top drummers" his name never comes up. Good? Yes. Defining? Hardly.
