    Default Strange drum configuration

Last night my wife and I went to the Carrie Underwood concert here in Memphis. My wife had bought tickets for her and my oldest grand-daughter and the grand-daughter wasn't able to go, so I went in her place. The concert was great, but the sound equipment wasn't so good. They had it turned up so loud that it distorted the music and made it hard to hear. Her voice sounded great though...

Her drummer had a unique and strange looking set up. He had his bass, no hanging toms, 2 FTs, 2 snares, and several cymbals that looked as big as garbage can lids. He had the bass setup right in front of him and a FT on the left side of the bass and the other FT on the other side of the bass. His 1st snare was in between his knees and pretty low. The oddest thing was, he had it tilted away from him at a pretty big angle. He had his HH in the normal place for a right handed drummer, and he had the 2nd snare on the other side of it. The FT on his left was also tilted away from him.

I couldn't see the other ft to see how it sat, but it looked to me that there was no way he was going to play those without wearing out the rims on them.

I was surprised, because he made not one rim hit the whole night. I know he had to have been worn out at the end of the night because almost every song groove was 4-on-the-floor and with quick tempo.

Has anyone else ever seen drums tilted away like that?

    Hey Jim,

Yeah, I saw those before. Go to youtube and do a search for garretgoodwindrums
and he's about half way down.

I see what you mean by the strange setup. They say he was raised up as a church drummer and taught himself.

I bet he was good in the concert.

    Hey, thanks for the reply!

I was beginning to think no one reads my messages.

He was a cool drummer. I was on the left side directly across from where he was and he was on the left side of the stage. I even had a jumbo tron right in front of me so I didn't miss anything.

It was a good show and we had fun!

A read a Tayler Hawkins interview a while back where he said that he angles his snare slightly away from him in his side project to make rimshots easier. Maybe that's what's going on here.

Most drum places can be set up relatively easily but percussionists might discover themselves using the agreement for time trying to discover the most ideal installation. The appropriate way to set up according to your design of drumming, dimension and your selections.

Maybe the answer to the question is simple as he sets them up how HE likes them. There is no real right or wrong way to set a kit up if it complements you and your playing. Sure its probably "bad technique" as some here would call it. But he is playing for Carrie Underwood so as dumb as it may look to some people...HES PLAYING FOR CARRIE UNDERWOOD so he knows what hes doing

    It's funny that you asked...

The motorcycle riding club I ride with nicknamed me Smiley because I'm always smiling when I'm riding or at a rally with my friends.

They say i have a split personality, Smiley and Jim. They say Smiley is fun Jim is not....Jim has a quick and very hot temper...

So, yeah....I may have a twin!

Maybe so, it was extreme the way he did it, but it looked cool.

I wasn't knocking his setup LDW, I was just commenting on how different it looked and how I'd never seen a setup like that.

As yes, he is playing for Carrie Underwood.......great show!

Well, he doesn't play traditional grip. That is the way trad players usually adjust their snares. Angled away from them just like a marching band drummer has his snare pointing away from him. But I looked and he plays matched. So if it feels good to him and it works, go for it. It's good to be different, right?
