200 bucks you may find a nice pro used snare, take your time, research and haggle a bit. GC comes down on used gear alot for me.
never hurts to make offers.
Yes check used as well, just check it out first if you can. I got some of mine off e-bay used with no problems and Craigslist. But I have to ask what sound are you looking for and what types of music do you play?
I would suggest a used ludwig Acrolite you can find em on CL or GC for about $100-150. It leaves you some extra money for other stuff.
6 Piece Pearl Masters Custom Extra Maple
14x5.5 Snare
10x8 Tom
12x9 Tom
14x12 Floor Tom
15x13 Floor Tom
22x16 Bass Drum
Miscellaneous Hardware
14 inch Zildjian Quick Beats
16 inch Istanbul Xist Crash
20 inch Meinl HCS ride.
Acrolite are not wood.
There should be plenty of choices for your budget. I bought a Tama Artwood maple for $98 bucks shipped to my door. Scour ebay, CL, etc and find a deal.
YES!!! My wife got me one of these DW/PDP Bubinga / Maple snares for Xmas. She paid $175.00. This is every bit a pro quality snare and it sounds fantastic. I've paid over $400.00 for snares that sound this good. Go to your local drum shop and try one out if you can. Darn ugly lugs though.

I'd check out the Sonor "Black Mamba" also...........I don't own one, but have heard them and they sound good. Almost bought one this year, but the wife had different plans
im looking for a deep snare i thought of making a stave snare because i have the hardware but no throw off how hard is it ? and it be cheaper cuz i have the hardware and wood is like $60-70
You have to have a wood lathe a router table drill, the hardest thing is cutting your snare bed right also getting the right diameter of your shell is important as well. If your still up to the task its up to you. There are raw shells you can buy on e-bay and places and they will even cut snare beds and bearing edges.
If not there is a new 8 x 14 maple Mapex MPX on e-bay right now for 130 OBO with free shipping, I have one and its a monster. They also have a Mapex black panther 8 x 14 maple natural finish with chrome hardware on e-bay for 199.99 delivered, It has a better throw hoops and an adjustable butt plate.

Look on guitarcenter.com at their used snare drums, place your limit at $200.00 and see what they have... there are a lot of nice pro level wood snare drums at that price level from Yamaha to Pearl, and everthing in between. You'll have a lot of success when you go used.

I agree that the Mapex Black Panther Special Edition Maple/Cherry Snare deserves serious consideration, if you can find one. Mine is the 13X6, and it was the "free" snare that came with the Pro M kits. I found it for $129, and I have found it to be an exceptional snare. At this point, though, you'll have to find it used.

cant go wrong with a Black Panther, they make me drool
on another point i scored a used Gretsch Cat Maple for 64 bucks on fleabay, came with a HD dry, hazy 300 and Puresound Blasters already tuned from a shop in Texas, got home, pulled it out of the box and started playing it, my wife jumped out her seat when i did the first crack.
purchasing a wood snare id stay with Mapex if i had the dough, ive played the BP and i love it, very versatile
Here is a pic of my MCX in Chestnut Fade.
