So I suggest you spend $2000 on 40 drum lessons. Then buy a piece of wood, and two sticks with the change, and you might win an audition. But if you buy the kit for $2000, the amount you can spend learning to play the instrument is less. Barring that, the Sonor Bop kit is $399 - a few demos are on You Tube - you seem like a boppy chap so it fits; Cymbals on Craigslist another $200; Or get an e kit for $700. Then spend the rest on lessons that make you stretch as a musician.
That's a great philosophy, although this thread is not for me to buy a kit, it's just a simple game for fun.

Only thing here that's really gotten my attention is the fact that someone said I could go out and buy $2K worth of beer.

Sorry for not specifying how long. Because one of my teachers charges 25 for 45 minutes( we once went over by 30 minutes once). Amazing lessons too. I guess I just get them cheap.

typical lessons in NY are $30 for half hour, $50 for the hour. Depends on the teacher... I think Jojo teaches in NYC for like $150-200/hr.

I wouldn't spread it out so thin that I had to step quality down to stay in budget, i'd just get upper level drums til I save up enough for the other upper level stuff I wanted. I'd probably try to get my hands on a used Pearl Reference, Tama Bubinga, Mapex Saturn, or DW Collectors(all VLT). Tough to find below the $2000 mark but I have seen miracles before.

I'd get one of these used kits:
    Pearl DLX 4pc (10, 12, 16, 22) for $299.00
    Tama Starclassic Birch Performer (10, 12, 14, 22) for $399.00
    Pearl Prestige Session Select (10, 12, 14, 16, 22) for $449.00

I'd get a used DW Snare ($299-$500) and a Pearl Sensitone brass ($149.00)
I'd get some good deals on used cymbals... Here are some that I've seen before:
    Zildjian 21" Sweet ride- $109.99

    I'd buy a used Roc-N-Soc throne for $79.00
I'd buy a Brick of Promark Oak 5As and a Brick of Vic Firth 85As
I'd buy a set of Evans Clear G2 360 heads, or Remo clear Vintage Emperors, an Evans G-Mad for the kick and an Aquarian Regulator front head.

After buying the gear and heads, I'd still have a decent amount of money left over to play around with and buy some more pieces (most likely more snares)!

Every time someone tries a fun game like this, half the people always chime in to tell you why they aren't playing along. I tried one like "if your house was on fire, what would you grab on the way out?" and got all sorts of chiding for being materialistic and not concerned about the more important things in life...blah, blah. Anyway - I'm in with this:

Yamaha Stage Custom Birch 5-Piece (w/hardware incl. pedal) $900
Zildjian A Custom Cymbal Pack $750
    Rock-N-Sock Nitro throne $160
    Batter heads/Sticks $80
    Cowbell/Tambourine $50

I've had a surplus of hardware for decades, so budgeting for stands is strange for me.

$1940 total - I'm confused about the sales tax discussion here. It's a state based tax and when you mail order from a state you do not live in, they do not charge it. None of the mega-online stores are Ohio based, so I've never paid it for any of my major purchases.

That's very close to my pick too. Start with the Stage Customs with hardware. $900

If I could link to it, I'd show you the Zildjian K pack for $720.

That leaves $380 to play with.

OR - going the used route, there's a lot of useable kits for sale around here for $300 or less. With a little digging, someone could come up with New Beat hit-hats, a 16 or 18" A crash and a 20" A ride for about $300 also - if I could link to it, I'd show you some.
You wouldn't save much buying used hardware, so I'd get a hardware pack for a couple hundred. That'd leave about $1200 to play with.

I had to move from NH to NY in '10 for work reasons. NY insisted I pay over $600 for the priviledge of buying my DW's here. Should have bought 'em in NH. No state tax! Want to go home...(bought a 4runner in '11 which rang up thousands in NY taxes)

For $2K you can't get anything new that'll keep you satisfied for long. I'd go with a small top quality used core of a kit (3 pc. bop?) with the intention of adding on later.

I disagree. Anything from pearl forum/tama rockstar level up, are really of high enough quality, to be considered lifetime kits if you take care of them. Thing is people's taste often change, and while you might be into a Neil Peart type of kit now, in 10 years, you might want to just have a nice little kit. Most people don't upgrade cause they need a better sound. They just want something newer/different.

I would buy everything used. There is a Ludwig usa American classic local for $700, a Zildjian A custom cymbal pack for $300 and A DW hardware pack for $275. After buying new and used equipment over the years I don't think I will ever buy brand new again unless it is fresh on the market and used is to hard to find. In this economy you can get amazing deals on gear that is in immaculate condition.
