Sky's the limit on this one. Some of my favorite dense woods would be: birdseye maple, cocobolo, and ironwood.

how's walnut or purple heart or both?
If this is your first, and to be considered a learning tool. Start with some cheaper wood first, like plain Jane maple, cherry or pine. So when you bugger it up, you are not creating a $40 piece of firewood. I have built with Cherry, Elm, Maple, Bloodwood, Ziricote, Canarywood, Lacewood, Beech, Walnut, Oak, Sassafrass, and Birch. I have had my best sounding results with Walnut. Walnut is also fairly soft and makes it easy to work with.

You can also google "Janka Hardness" and you will find some good listings of all kinds of wood and their respective density, hardness. Some sites also have accompanying sample pictures.

yes this is my first and thanks for the tips
Here is Bloodwood which I finished finally last night. My first couple shells became planters and firewood. This is around build number 30 or so for me.
