well you can pretty much do that with all kits , but i think it depends on what size floor tom your going to use. if your floor is a 16 inch,id say go with the 12,,, but if your floor is a 14,id go with the 10
The thing i like about my ludwig element kit is that i can break it down to different configurations. For example :a 6 piece down to a 5 piece or down to a 4 piece set. When i go to the VA's talent show i am just taking a 4 piece setup with the hi-hat,one ride, and one crash. I just haven't decided which tom to use the 10" or 12" what do you all think?

Well my floor tom is a 14x14 so i will try the 10" tom and see how that works.

the cool thing is ,,, there are no rules . try every combo that you can until you come up with one that you like.. good luck and have fun ....

Yeah, the same with my Ludwig Epic set. I have the following:
18x14" bass drum
13x5.5" snare
8x7", 10x7.5" & 12x8" rack toms
14x14" floor tom
Here are some configurations I've mucked around with. Note that sometimes I've got additional drums....a couple of Maxwin aluminium octobans (from my set of eight that I've owned since the early 90's) and a custom acrylic 8x6" micro-snare made for me by a good friend of mine, Nick Pansini.
Have as much fun swapping around different layouts as much as what I do!
