Afternoon Russ.

Am i missing something.?

Is a subliminal message hidden deep within that i haven't found.?

The French do many things well but unlike most other European countries their music is bloody awful.It`s a bit strange really as they have a very long tradition of music and arts stretching back well over a thousand years(probably twice as long) but in all that time i can`t list 3 French bands that people would have heard of.

This is just a personal opinion of course and i am sure some of you are big fans of French rock music.

There is a great kids programme over here called Horrible histories that unsurprisingly teaches kids all about history.

I can think of five. Daft Punk, M83, Gojira, Adagio and Gorod. Ok, maybe the last two many people may not have heard of, but they're still popular amongst fans of prog metal and tech death metal. Gojira is one of my favourite bands, and they're the biggest metal band out of France at the moment.

My French teacher showed us some particularly risque Orangina commercials featuring animals. It made for an interesting class discussion.

I loved the Horrible Histories books. Terry Deary is an awesome author.

M83,Adagio and Gorod.?Never heard of any of them and i expect the majority of people here also haven't heard of them either.

A quick poll..hands up if any of you have an Adagio cd in your collection.?..no thought not.!

Saying Gojira is the biggest metal band out of France is hardly an achievement as,lets be honest,they aren't up against much competition.!

Now if you said they where the best metal band to come from the USA,Germany,Canada or Sweden then fair enough,that would be something to sit up and take notice of but France.?

French architecture and food = Great.

Music = ruddy awful.

Don't forget Jean Michel Jarre also comes from France, and without him, you wouldn't have much of an electronic music scene that some of us take for granted these days. Plus you have a whole bunch of Francophone artists who have contributed to the World Music scene and a few do reside in France.





Peter Gabriel also worked with this guy, Youssou N'Dour, who comes from the former French colony of Senegal:

Also Mauritius produced a style of music called sega.....I heard of this quite a while back thanks to a few Mauritian friends....(Mauritians speak a French Creole but they all are educated in formal French over there too)...sega has a lilt to it somewhat like reggae, not technically hard for a drummer to play, but the feel is another thing. (Around my way in Sydney we have a great Mauritian drummer called Maurice Mariasson, great guy who happens to run one of my local drumshops.)

Oh no something even worse then French rock music..the dreaded world music.

Sting had a go at it when he went on his eco trip and that was awful.Playing weird instruments and accompanied by some African choir with their close knit harmonies all in the name of art and culture.

Rubbish.

Each to their own of course and while some people may like Youssou N'Dour i will stick with Rush,Led Zep and Iron Maiden.

Really though the entirety of music is made up of all kinds of stuff from all over. Like a jigsaw puzzle being made up of different pieces with different pictures on it, all of them needed to complete the puzzle and make art. I saw the video and was like whoa what is this? This is how they teach the alphabet to kids in school? So I was like whaaat France is awesome, I dunno.
