Choke

I attempted to choke my crash during a song today.
And
It hurt really bad. I'm not gonna try it again til I know what the hell I'm doing lol. Is there a special technique to this?

Practice it slow, outside of playing a song. Do nothing but crash and catch it. You have your hand right next to it when you crash so you can catch it on the first bounce. It just takes a little practice. You'll get it.

The cymbal, im willing to bet he didnt have a tough enough grip on it and he hit it too hard

Just, keep your hand right on it, like, in position to clamp your hand down and catch it, hit, and push your hand together, itll choke the cymbal right away, you just gotta get used to it and try it agian, its hurt me before when ive choked it

to start with, yes. you can choke a cymbal with one hand too. i like to see how fast i can choke each cymbal on my kit in a pattern.

Ive always wondered how those guys can hit the cymbal and catch it with the same hand they hit it in, but at the same speed as the other hand

i choke my cymbal with the hand i hit it with, i just kind of make it a fluid motion where i just kind of hit it while moving my hand at it to choke it

I've pinched myself between the stick and the cymbal while catching. That hurts.

hm i have hit my fingertips on the edge of the cymbal doing that before. That hurts. Many many things can go wrong :P But practice it lots! :>
