Black Beauty
Ludwig Black Beauty is a fantastic snare, as Rick suggested. Another one I'm a big fan of is the Pork Pie "Big Black Brass".
Sonor - Pearl - Tama - Mapex - Paiste - Sabian - Roc N Soc - Pro Mark - Gibralter - Evans - Dixon - Mapex
Ludwig Acrolite.
Man, I've gotta get an aluminum snare. I wonder if someone makes an 8" deep one...
The only two constants I have are DW and Zildjian.
again, acrolite.
don't put off till tomorrow what you can put off today
Breaking the bank is relative.................Like Rick said, the BB is the top of the line, but they usually go for more than $400 used..................unless you find a smoking deal.
The acrolite can be had for around 100 bones..................and is a great snare.
Depends on your definition of "Breaking the bank"
Aluminum: Ludwig Supraphonic or Acrolite (used prices are very reasonable). I believe that there's also an aluminum model of the Pearl sensitone.
Brass: Black beauties are expensive, even used. Look at Rogers Dynasonics, Slingerland Krupa/Soundkings, Pearl sensitone brass, Porkpie B.O.B., pdp Ace.
I'd stay away from steel. I find it to be great for rock, but don't really see it working well for jazz.
Mmm... Saturns.
I have this Acrolite sitting around doing nothing. If you are interested, PM me.
Black Beauty and lm402 and lm400. Pork pie makes some nice inexpensive snares
Gretsch Catalina Jazz
PDP Woody
Zildjian A customs
Acro vote here! Ludwig Acrolite or Ludwig standard is certainly the least expensive best way to go IMO.

The line between the real world and the machine world is becoming more and more blurred every day.But its not that humans are turning into automations or becoming slaves to the machines. No, we're simply growing toward each other!
Acrolite as well, Crush also makes a affordable aluminum snare that I will recommend. Also as recommended Pork Pie BOB, PDP ACE, can be found cheap on E-bay, Pearl Brass sensatone, Worldmax Black Brass, etc. Good luck
If you want a steel drum, Ludwig has the new Supralite in 4x14, 5.5x14 and 6.5x14..affordable.

Oh man, I have a bit of spendy money. Do i get a supralite? Or one of those red steel snares from yamaha...? firstworldproblems.jpg
@ OP, might I recommend a PDP Hammered Brass Snare? They aren't in production anymore, but they can be had for about 150-250 depending on how thickheaded the sellers are. It's my go to snare. Beats out my collectors and dynasonic. FWIW
