Default Locking in with the snare?

This may be a silly question, but I can't find an answer either way.

Leaving aside the "play whatever you want and make up your own style" approach and instead sticking to "traditionally" this is how it's done....

Similar to how a bass guitar can lock in and follow the pattern of the kick drum, Is there any instruments that would usually be used to accent/follow the snare?

Is it better that nothing plays along with the snare to help it stand out more?

As far as I know, there isn't really anything the snare "should" lock with. I think it is just wherever it sounds best and that might mean it lines up with something else or it might not, but I could wrong.

Well, it is usually the main time keeper of.....every song with drums in it. So it does normally stand on it's own. And more than likely every instrument follows along and feeds off of the timekeeper. Although not directly sometimes. A tom roll or a cymbal hit usually immediately follows the snare in a lot of songs. But mostly it stands by itself I think.

Depends on the music really. In fusion, jazz, swing, Latin rhythms the hi hat keeps the time on 2 and 4 or on all quarter notes (usually). In more straight ahead music (rock and blues) the snare is the back-beat and helps keep time along with the hi hat (usually). The bass drum can be used to keep time but usually it's doing it's own thing. Yes, it can lock in with the bass or rhythm parts and keep time but it's not the rule.

That's the beauty of music. You can do anything you want with it. Experiment and have fun. Be creative and use your imagination. Most of all, HAVE FUN!!!

i don't like anything to lock on my snare. It's my favorite drum and I like it to be left alone and stand out.

Get a really loud 50ply maple or steel snare that doesn't need to follow anything. J/k j/k

    Thanks again folks.
Everytime I ask a question here, I get decent replies and learn a little more.
