I use the EC2 clear and I really like them.
Clear- Brighter tone than coated. Decent attack. Not as much low end as coated but still decent lows. Evans™ G2™ tom batter heads feature two plies of 7mil film ensuring consistency and durability. The perfect blend of depth, sustain and attack make small toms sing and floor toms growl.
Frosted (coated)- Warmer in tone than clear. Very responsive attack. Good low end. Evans™ EC2™ series features two plies of 7mil film with optimized attack, tone, length of sustain and ease of tuning for each size head. The Sound Shaping Technology (SST™) Edge Control ring mounted on the underside delivers an extremely well balanced and pre-EQ'd sound across the full kit by varying the size of the ring for each different head size. The Frosted coating increases low-end response and attack.
I copied and pasted the most of what I posted right from the Evans website. I would suggest going there. They have a nice description of the heads and sound files you can listen to.

Basically you're comparing two very different head designs. If it was just two G2's of coated and clear i'd say the clear has more natural attack but somewhat of a higher frequency than the coated, which hits on low frequencies and helps round out the tone, capturing warmth instead. Since the EC2 has the rings though, it's going to have a bit more attack than either type of G2 head. The sweet spot for tuning will be lower the heavier the head is, so it will also tune up rather quickly. G2 will have more sustain and bounce, but EC2 will control and focus it a little better.
Theoretically you could just get the G2 and add moongels or rings to simulate the effects of the ring that's already a part of the EC2's head, but an EC2 comes that way and allows for less clutter on top of the head. It really depends whether you need a more open or a more focused tone. I always wanted to try EC2 over G2 on all the toms, see what it does. I tried the Remo variation of this(Pinstripe/Emperor) and it sounded thick and meaty just like I wanted. Probably would never do such a thing on a birch, ash, acrylic, basswood, or other shorter-sustaining kit but it worked wonders on my maple one. Toms tuned up very fast and I got them nice and low, but not to the put of losing tone altogether and sounding flat like a cardboard box.
And if you think i'm crazy, there was a guy I remember who also had a Renown kit as well. He was using Hydraulics over G2 resos, but I guess he really dug how it turned out. Maple gives you a lot of breathing room as far as your options with heads, something about the wood gives it natural sustain to work with so you can dampen the heck out of it but it will still give you tone to spare. I'm not sure whether I like it or birch better, they each got somethin special that I dig about em.

I really love the low end sound . I think I will try the EC2 coated . Let me also say , that it was the G2 clears that sold me when I tested the kit in the store .
Don't know the difference but I know the EC2's clear sound good on my kit.
I've used the coated ec2's quite a bit since they've been available... I try all sorts of different combinations. Like the others have said, you get alot of focus and low end. My preference is the coated ec2 vs. the clear version... And I like it better when paired with a thinner more resonant bottom head... but those are my preferences. It's one of my favorite heads that evans makes.
On my Renowns 24,13,16 I run Evans coated G2's over coated G1's. Great warm, low tone. John
late8 has recommended, when deciding on new heads, that you get one for your favorite tom and see how you like the sound. Since the sound of the G2 clear heads is what sold you on your kit, I think late8's suggestion might be a good one for you.

I just switched to the clear EC2 heads and love em. They have a very nice tone and the muffle ring built in makes it so I dont have to use the moongel anymore, at leas for the smaller toms. I havent replaced my larger tom heads yet so well see but have seen sooo many other professional drummers use them and love clear heads so I went for it and glad I did
That was one of the reasons that I tried the EC2's cause I was using moongel on my G2's and love the sound of them. So to me EC2's sound like or better than the G2's with moongel
I would also want to add that I was probably the first one to use EC2's on this forum when it was new to the market and there were quite a few members bias against them. Today I am happy to see that a lot members have converted to the EC2's and see how good of a head it is.
