any pros or cons of the two? Is it better to have lugs separate for top n bottom heads or just tie it all into one (10) lug? I can't recall any 8 lug snares being separated into 16 or 12/24

From what I can tell less lugs means a lower/less adjustable tuning range, but the drum will get in tune quicker. The opposite applies with more - greater tuning possibilities, but you have to spend longer tweaking it to get it in the spot you want. I wouldn't go below 6 on a snare though.

yeah although my snares are one piece lugs they are long and seem to me more evened out if that makes sense. I see deep snares with just one round lug in the middle of the drum and question the tuning accuracy and load bearing capacities.

Taye has a deep brass i'd love to get my hands on because of this. 20 independent lugs.

Tama Starclassic snares usually have separate top and bottom lugs. Mine has 6 on the top, 6 on the bottom, it's 13" x 5.5"

Honestly, I don't think there's any advantage or disadvantage with separate lugs. I own a bunch of single lug snares too.

+1..............I don't think single ended or dual ended lugs change anything, other than the looks of the snare

On shell depths of 6 inches or less, I don't think it matters.
When you get to the 7, 8, even 10 inch shells, I believe the separate lugs are required.

I have snares that use both single and double lugs. I don't see any noticeable difference in tuning.

Doesn't stop DW, Pearl, Gretsch, Tama, etc from making some of the best snares around!

The trick with separate lugs is making sure you don't get one with single point attachment (one screw per lug) or you risk leaning of the lugs over time. Yamaha Nouveau lugs are notorious for it.
The answer to all "Which one should I buy?" questions is the same. Play them and choose the one that sounds best to you.

The bigger issue is 8 lug or 10 lug. I like 8 lug snares. The two blatant issues, 8 has less mass attached to the shell, 10 will give a little more ability to micro tune.
