    Default Tama Star drums (!!!WOW!!!)

    I swing into Dale's this weekend. They had a 6 piece Star kit set up. GORGEOUS! Bubinga shells, cordia outer ply with a red lacquer finish. Just the most beautiful drums you've ever seen.

    One of the shop guys asks me if I want to play them. YES!

    These drums sound UNREAL! I mean, really, no BS, the BEST sounding drums I've ever heard in my life. They sing for days and days. The 12" tom had a sound not of this world.

    Then I said "I'm afraid to ask but how much?" Him: "About 7 grand"

    OOOOOOOOOOH!

    Honestly, they mad the DW Collectors kit set up beside them sound like garbage. And I love the DW sound. I couldn't believe how good these sounded. And the mounts are really cool. Wish I could lay down that kind of cash on drums.

    Forgive me but I didn't snap any pics and I can't find the red cordia finish on Tama's site...but here's a stock photo anyway.

    That's a classy looking kit. $7K puts it out of my range, though. Still, I'd sure love to hear the sound.

    And Dale's is known for having outstanding prices so I shudder to think what they would cost somewhere else.

    Marko :

    Construction and finish look like Starclassics to me.............what are the improvements/differences that would make these worth that kind of jack ?

    [P.S. I do like that new mount-lock system.]

    New mounts for sure. Isolated floor tom mounts. Must be thin shells, they had re-rings in them. Other than that I really don't know. The lugs are different from the Starclassic as well.

    Thats a gorgeous kit in Green as well. I wonder how it sounds compared to a warlord? Have you heard one of those live?

    I googled Tama Star Cordia & the first result was the Dales site with pictures of the red kit. Very nice looking kit. I'd link a pic but I'm on my phone!
    Also, price says over $11,500 before the discount! Wow.

    The TAMA website has some information..............I did notice the re-rings.
    Available in Bubinga and Maple..............and hand-oiled.
    The bearing edges appear to be 30 degrees but with a bit of a different shape than we have come to expect.

    Let's see...............
    Thin shells of high quality;
    Cast hoops;
    Small classic lugs;
    30-degree bearing edges;
    What will they think of next ?......Silver interiors with orange-and-white serial stickers ?
    (Just kidding -- had to throw that one in there).

    In all seriousness -- this new line looks like a hybrid of the best of Tama, Ludwig & Gretsch with some new hardware features added in -- it looks very nice.................and expensive !

    Cool looking kits, I don't like the middle line decoration though, it spoils it.

    I don't either. But believe it or not they put that same inlay on the re-rings of the snares! Wild.

    Those are really nice drums, i've heard some audio and it was very very satisfying. I never liked the inlay/stripe thing Tama does though, but I am quite a fan of every other finish they've run. For me though if I was going to get some Bubinga drums i'd probably go with the more affordable Starclassic Bubingas, which to me sound earthy, deep, and huge! I hear they make em in China now, but I couldn't care less because they still sound amazing to me! Inlay aside, the only real criticism I have with this series is cost. I hope this line drops in price a little bit, 11k is above what DW charges for a small exotic set! I feel like if they don't address this issue - they'll get lumped together with a very exclusive demographic. Shouldn't the price be set to appeal to more buyers? I'd make it like 4000-5000 for a 5 piece, that seems reasonable right?

    This is their pinnacle, nothing better made, line of drums. They are incredible, and hand made in Japan as well, so you pay through the nose just for that alone. Besides the new mounting system, highest quality materials, thinner plys and hand craftsmanship, they oil the insides of the shell as well. You can opt for the inlay on the rings (back in the original Starclassic days these were called Sound Focus Rings and available as an option on all lines), and you can opt for no inlay at all inside or out on the shell.

    Simply stunning and I bet they sound unreal. I think it's truly amazing that drum manufactures can continue to innovate and come up with yet one more thing to make me spend my money on!

    Ya, I guess I shouldn't have posted that. You'd better ditch yours too Rich.

    Edit: I was just trying to find a demo clip of them being played on youtube. I forgot that the link was sponsored by a drum shop. Oops.
