I alter my stick technique, if I want to have the cowbell ring, I rebound the stick, for more of a muted sound, I play the stick into the cowbell and hold it there.

Don't they come in different sizes. I seem to remember seeing small 1's and bigger 1's. Get the size that suits your needs.
