    Default iron cobra too stiff

    Hi

Does anyone know if you can loosen the iron cobra double leg lever glide 9000 hi-hat stand? i've got the tension adjustment set to the lowest but it's still quite stiff and springy, i'm comparing it to a Yamaha old stand so it may just be it's not worn in enough as i only use it for gigs or it's how it's meant to be and i need to get used to it more, i noticed the hat's sounding a bit sloopy when there meant to be closed, can it be done??

    cheers Mark

They are fairly stiff...I notice little difference between each step of adjustment. I assume you mean you've moved the lever around?

Mark, I've got the same hi-hat stand, and I agree that it has a more solid (stiff) feel than other stands that I have. If I want the real crisp "chick" sound without the wash, I have to add more pressure than I did on my other hi-hat stands. I don't consider than a bad thing, though, because I have learned how to get the exact sound that I want from my hats, and it's fairly easy with this stand.

That's why they call it a Iron Cobra and not a Rubber Cobra.

it doesn't seem to hold closed as good as my other stand, closed hat playing seems to start sounding like the hats are opening, i seem to have to make a bit more of a effort keeping them closed.

You're paying for rock solid and reliable hardware with the Iron Cobra series. For something more adjustable you might be looking at Pearl's eliminator stands. I have one, and it's the best i've currently owned. Acquired taste with either though, it'll take a little getting used to.

Russ, i had one of these a few years ago and couldn't fault it, maybe an option.

I have an idea for you.

I normally release the clutch cymbal when I'm not using the hats for an extended length of time. This preserves the spring tension over time.

Mount a big heavy ride cymbal on the clutch mechanism and leave it suspended. In theory, this should soften the spring a bit and maybe make it loosen some.
