    Default A possible discovery?

Hey, I was practicing the other day and wondered if I discovered a new sticking not previously used. It uses 7 strokes, although it is not performed the same way as the 7 stroke roll. It goes like rllrrlr or can be reversed for lrrllrl. I based it around the idea of a 4 piece kit, so you'd start r on floor tom, llrr on snare, l on rack tom, and then r on ft. Using that sticking will take you from low to high back to low again, for a nice balanced fill. However, you can reverse the process to make a high low high sound while also using the whole kit(if it's not a giant kit). So for that you'd be going l on rack tom, rrll on snare, r on floor tom, and ending on rack tom again.

But to my original question, has this sticking been used anywhere before? If so, what's it called? Thought i'd share if it hasn't been officially named yet.

Hey Russ, looks like you've got a six stroke roll ending with R on the 1 (assuming you're doing this as 16th note triplets). I see/use this type of lick a lot. Cool stuff!

Ah so it's a modified six?

Looks like a six stroke roll with one extra single stroke at the end. It's cool...I went and practiced it on my kit after I saw this thread.

I'm gonna give it a whirl tonight when I practice. I think i shall call it "the Russ rudiment".

    Thanks for the idea!

Haha very flattering Mark! Although I think it may be the way Mike Johnston demonstrates six stroke rolls(but when I looked up the official six stroke roll, the sticking was different so going on that I thought I was doing something else entirely), it would be very awesome to think up something not mentioned on any known rudiments. I can report that using it has really added some color and life to the dullness I felt like my playing had previously(not that I don't like playing simple straight beats, I just don't do much fills/solos). I'm still trying to figure out how to effectively use this as well as other rudiments, as it doesn't seem to match up with the main beat as well as i'd hoped. I'll be playing and then try to throw it in, and to my ear it seems awkward and out of place.

It makes for a pretty badass groove with the kick and hats on the R's and the snare on the L's of the stroke.

RLLRRL is a common 6 stroke, but the way you are presenting it as is a 7 stroke (since it has 7 stickings :P). That is often how I play fills, the first 6 notes fit as a sixteenth triplet while the 7th is a crash or what have you.

Just remember, that these "strokes" carry no time signature.. so a 7 stroke could be played as eights, sixteenths, triplets... etc... its just a sticking pattern.
    Too Much Stuff.
