People spend a lot of money for "custom" drums that in the end are going to sound like.............................well............. .........drums.

yeah but then you have something special that no one else or minimum people have.
It's like your mustang.... why are you modifying it? Was it not good enough for you the way it was? Or you trying to make it your own? Cause in the end... isn't it still just "a car"
And they buy them because...................they.................... .want....................to.
Zack, that's the old apples and oranges comparison.
There was no way I could get a car that does everything my GT does for $25,000. At the same time, you can get a $2,000 set of drums that, in the hands of a good drummer that knows how to tune and that set will sound just as good as a $20,000 set.
Now comes the part that I hate. Being practical. I no more needed a $45,000 GT than someone needs a $25,000 custom set of drums.

Got about 10 gigs under her belt and going very well, although I have been gigging my luddies the last few gigs. This sublime Birch kit is a good change of pace when I need to hear a slightly different tone. Love the Ludwig Atlas rail consolette I added as well. Works very well.

Rukus is a great custom brand being built right here on Long Island, by a guy I'm humbled to call my friend. Pete builds each drum by hand, laying up the wood shells in unique combinations of species, and giving them beautiful finishes. I have had the privilege of playing a few of his kits as they are house kits at some of the best venues around here. He is quickly gaining international notoriety for the sound and craftsmanship of his drums and he recently built a snare for Todd Sucherman. I visited his shop and I am hopefully going to be ordering a snare from him in the very near future.

First of all, there are some simply stunning drums on this thread. Makes me drool. LOL I love learning about builders I didn't know of before.
I'd like to add my 2 cents to the "why get an expensive kit" argument.
Until you have owned a boutique made kit for a while and changed heads a couple times and recorded them live and in a studio, you just can't know.
I have two kits from Doc Sweeney drums. A steam bent kit and a stave constructed kit. I paid far less for both of these kits than I would have for a custom order from the big company here in CA I'd rather not name. And that's for just ply drums with a fancy veneer. High quality plies no doubt, but the difference in performance is real.
They tune up easier, faster than any of the 8 different factory kits I had prior. They sound fuller, fatter, warmer, and project better as well.
Plus, these are heirloom quality one-of-a-kind instruments built to my specs from wood species that are wicked rare that will never lose any value, and may even increase in value as the years pass. You can't say that about the drums with the big initials. And let's remember, I got a quote from them too. it was $1,000's of dollars MORE than I paid. The sales rep on the phone admitted I was paying more for a name and reputation. Bah!
If you do your homework, you can get a nice deal on a boutique kit in comparison to some of the big name "custom" drums.
Now, I've been gone from this site for several years and I can't recall how to share pictures. Tried to find a tutorial or something.
Please advise.
Cheers
Proudly playing:

A bunch of snares
A bunch of cymbals
Off-Set double pedals
I think I love to play the drums simply because you get to hit 'em!!!
