I am currently running Remo Coated Emperors on my Tama Starclassic Birch and it sounds amazing! I am inerested in trying Remo Coated AmbassodorX heads next or Remo clear Controlled Sound heads like Tony Williams and Steve Smith back in the day. But for now, I am totally happy with Coated Emperors. Good attack, warm, can get good lows and good highs depending on tuning, good sustain. No external muffling needed.

On my Superstars I use clear Emps over clear Ambos.
Applying drum heads to a kit are more about knowing what the bearing edges are and what the heads do than the type of shell material used to construct the kit. Bearing edges, and their flatness are where the heads work to produce sound.
Regardless of the heads used, a sharp 45 degree bearing edge will produce a sharp attack, ring and sustain. Rounded over bearing edges will produce more tone but less ring and sustain.
That said, drum heads come in only two types..... Single ply which produce the most ring and sustain and Multiple ply which produce less ring and sustain.
Other things are interjected into those two head designs to dampen and control sound in order to reduce ring and sustain.
Hydraulics are used between multiple ply heads to reduce ring but they also decay much quicker
Sound rings are used on single and multiple ply heads to reduce ring at the outer edges of the head, they also cause a quicker decay
Coatings are used to dampen the ring associated with single ply heads and provide a surface for brushes rods and mallets to do their magic
Therefore regardless of head manufacturer or drum shell type, the answer to what type of head to use, depend upon the bearing edges of the drum and ones desire to control that bearing edge sound.
Bearing edges which are not flat will not produce a good sound no mater the head used.
Sharp bearing edges (45) will always produce attack and sustain
Rounded bearing edges will always produce tone but less attack and sustain.
Mixing single or multiple ply heads will provide a controlled sound but only related to the bearing edge type and its flatness around the entire circumference of the drum. One cannot change a bearing edge with a drum head application.

With all the heads mentioned here, what it simply means is: BUY THE HEADS YOU WANT.
Check the bearing edges and make sure they are OK. Past that point it doesn't matter if they are 45, 30, 22 1/2, 35-24-36 or any combination of the previous #'s. Put the heads on and TUNE YOUR DRUMS. They will sound fine.
