i think it time to go maple to mix wood
my 2 cents
I'm sure there are threads like this before, but I'm selling a guitar and will have about $300-$350 that I was thinking about using for some drum stuff.
One possibility is to spend a little more and get another kit. One drum shop has 3 piece Yamaha Rock Tour kits for $499. From what I've heard they are supposed to have a nice deep "rock" sound. Given that I have 2 Tama birch kits already, not sure it makes sense to have another rock sized kit.
I could look for a kit (used or new) with a smaller kick for smaller venues.
The other option is to get another snare. Right now I have a Tama 5x14 COB Stewart Copeland snare, the 6x14 Superstar birch snare that came with my kit, and the 6.5x14 Tama Artwood that came with my old Tama kit. I usually play the COB in larger venues (it cuts) and the SS snare in smaller. I could see getting a maple snare, a deeper brass snare, or something totally different.
What do you guys think?

I'd get heads and a snare. Another kit doesn't make sense since you have two acoustics and one a/e for electronic use(you really can't go wrong with birch, it ALWAYS SOUNDS GOOD!). You could even get the wife some chocolate or flowers with what's left over!

Russ, I'm confused. I don't need heads.
As far as a snare, I was looking for specific ideas.
@Ricky, I was thinking maple or mixed wood too. Thoughts? Tama SLP Power Maple was one thought, Ludwig Epic (birch/maple), but I was looking for other snares to check out.

The SPL Power Maple had good reviews after last years NAMM show. I like the look and sound.

I'm just saying, you could get more with the money and save them for when you do need a head swap. The epic is a good choice, affordable enough to leave your options wide open. Should sound great with birch to knock down buzz a little, while the maple gives it some warmth and body. Doesn't hurt to be prepared right?

I had an Epic before and liked it, so that's definitely an option, since I know how it sounds. I'm hoping to find something new.
I'm financially sound enough that I don't need to "prepare ahead" to buy a set of heads, so that's an unnecessary move for me.

Does it have to be a drum?
Certainly not Bish. A snare, or another kit, were the first things that came to mind.
I don't really need any cymbals or hardware, that's why I went there.
What did you have in mind?

Any kit that you get with 400 probably isn't going to be much of an upgrade.

At first I was thinking specialty cymbal with no direction in mind but then what about e-fx for your current drums? Have you tried putting some effects with your acoustic kit? A couple of triggers and a decent brain would be so cool.
Ok, yes, I've done that and it makes for an entirely different (Wood/combination) sound without the expense of an entirely different kit. Plus, you can adjust the effects to really open up your options. With the right controller of course.
Just trying to give you some other ideas and different directions maybe you hadn't considered.
You could get a Ludwig Breakbeats kit and be almost as good as me kaos?

KO, if you have a need for a kit for those lower volume, or tight space gigs, then I would look for a used Jazz kit. I found my Gretsch Cataliina Elite Jazz kit for the money that you're talking about. It has "mahogany" shells, and my band loves that kit. It's fun to play, and gives me a kit that's easy to transport, sets up in tight places, and looks dead sexy (White Marine Pearl wrap). LOL
Now if you don't need the smaller kit, then I vote for the snare.

Having just bought a snare recently, I can certainly recommend the DW Performance Series Steel snare. I got it for about $300 and it sounds amazing. It's available in 5.5x14", 6.5x14" and 8x14" sizes.

Percussion? That is, if you muck around with that sorta stuff like what I do.
Otherwise, if going for a snare, the Epic's a pretty cool choice....but ever thought for going for the Epic "Brick"?

The Tama SLP Bubinga Snare sounds great, and so does the SLP Power Maple. In that price range you could also get a used DW Collectors maple snare.

what kind of smaller venues are you playing? you could invest in a percussion setup, like drumbeldore has. maybe get a cajon and some percussion toys (not sure what genres you ususally play).
what about some other interesting percussion stuff...like conga, jam blocks, chimes, gong?
