I would love to know more about it! My In-Laws neighbor brought this over to them, asking if I would be interested in it. They told me there neighbors have had this for over 40 yrs, and they can't recall where they got it. There is no name or anything. It is real rawhide with rawhide string and mallet sounds fantastic! Just wondering if anyone on here might have any info(Value, What it actually is and so on) or might be able to point me in the right direction.

Looks like you got some American Indian frame drum, as used by their shamans. Similar drums appear in a number of cultures such as the native Siberians, Mongolians and others. In their belief systems, they'd say that the sound of the drums vibrations helped them to fall into a trance and communicate with their ancestors or to help heal people. These kind of drums, frame drums, are some of the oldest forms of percussion on the planet.....the Irish bodhran, the various Middle Eastern frame drums such as the tar, bendir and doira and even the humble 'headed' tambourine are in the same family of drums. Have you got a picture of the drumhead itself and the beater as well?

Be very careful with those calf or goat skin heads. If they get too dry, they can draw up & split. If you wet them some make sure they don't dry out too quickly as they could split. If its too humid, you can tighten them up by drying the head some (hairdryer, matches, candles, etc.) don't overdo it as you can set them on fire or split them by drying too quickly.

    Beautiful instrument!!!!
