There is no better. I guess if you have several toms, they can't all attach to the bass drum.

I prefer a stand. I like the triangle configuration rather than the typical 5 pc config where both rack toms are mounted to the bass drum.

I have read that the less the hardware penetrates the shells the better the sound so if you have a bass drum with no rack hardware sticking in it the better the bass drum will sound. Take that for what its worth.

I think a stand will give you more placement options. If you have more than the standard number of toms then you'd need some sort of stand anyway, but I've never liked having more than 1 tom on the bass drum for some reason.

A lot of drummers like the stand mounted tom method for the reason mostly so you can get your ride nice and close and low positioned half over your bass drum for easy access. No waste of movements is the key. Everything nice and close but not in the way of anything else. The offset tom mounting method is good for this.

I'd rather it was off the kick. I like being able to move the toms without also moving the bass, provides a lot more flexibility. Also, less stress on kick from supporting all the weight. Can't think of a reason not to isolate via stands/rack.

i like mine on a stand offset from the kick just because i like to have my 2nd tom directly right in front of my right hand instead of having to turn to get it...just feels more fluid and natural

I'm not sure a stand gives all that many more options. sooner or later the stand will but up to the side of the bass drum or else get in the way of something else on the set.

I disagree smartly. Have you actually tried it, or is that just what you figure. If you tried it and didn't get solid results that sucks. But this method definitely allows huge advantages.

Yep. Had both. Right now I only play one up and it's on a stand. I've seen mounting set-ups on the bass that had a universe of options in terms of height, angle, distance as well.

As I said in my first post, if your doing multiple toms, then the need for a stand becomes quite apparent. For a conventional setup, one or two up, there's really little difference.

50/50: small Tom on stand allows my larger Tom to be mounted and centered over the kick.

Agreed. Multiple toms it's a must. Small set-up not so much.

I like having my toms on a stand offset from the bass drum to get my ride closer, and soon I plan on having x-hats shoved in under my ride just above the bass somewhere.

You mean over your ride, right? That's the main reason I use the stand tom method. I like my ride close and easy to reach.

I mean under my ride slightly. I'd say the best example of this would be Blake Richardson of Between The Buried And Me.

That's a great vid. He's got a Sabian chopper hiding under that ride.

Good Vid! I like the setup with the hats under the ride. Never had remote hats but I may reconsider soon.

For me, I prefer a stand. Can't place the tom exactly where I want it if it's mounted from the BD.

Tried again last week mounting the tom to the BD to see if it would simplify things. In actuality, it complicated things. The tom mount for the BD has to actually be removed before putting the BD in the bag/case. The clamp on the cymbal stand remains attached while going into the HW bag. Plus the BD tom mount is much heavier than the cymbal clamp and it's another piece of HW that would have to go in the HW bag. For me, mounting to the cymbal stand is faster and lighter
