I'm not a fan of telling someone to start off practicing double bass drum by just practicing the rudiments. No offense to those that advise that way, I just think that can be overwhelming for the beginner. There are specific double bass exercises that are more practical and can be used in everyday songs. The most obvious is the 16th singles like you're doing. Next, do something like this to gain more control with stopping and starting those 16ths:

Whatever you practice with double-kick, make the metronome your friend.

Metronomes are fine and all, but boring as hell. I'd switch it up between that and playing along with songs/drumless tracks that have a double bass speed you feel comfortable with. Once you got it down, move up from there. You'll get the speed and control over time. I like to enjoy my time behind the kit. Metronomes feel too much like "work".

    Count 1-an-2-an-3-an-4-an
hit the right beater on 1, the snare on 2, left beater on 3 and snare on 4.

then when you get in time double it (snare on "an", bass beaters on the numbers).

    then use the metronome.

Good one matey. Of course, I should add, don't just only play with a metronome....you need to play along with songs, so that you get an idea of why you're practicing what you're practicing. Mind you, I often I use a drum machine like my old trusty Roland R-70, where I program in percussion lines and it even has a number of bass sounds which I'll write bass lines with, and I'll sit and step write single bar, two bar or four bar patterns, which makes it a bit more interesting than the regular 'click, click' of a metronome.

When I started off I did an excerise I warm up with or when I use to teach people double pedal. Its in 4/4 the first measure is quaters 1,2,3,4 but like R,L,R,L; then the 2nd measure use 8th 1+2+3+4+ like R,L,R,L,R,L,R,L,; Then the 3rd measure use 16th notes 1e+a 2e+a 3e+a 4e+a Like R,L,R,L,R,L,R,L,R,L,R,L,R,L,R,L; then repeat that until you get the feel for using double but also work on using 32nd notes or 64th notes as a 4th and 5th measure.

I would just do sixteenths, simple rudiments, and sixteenths that have one note cut out, I.E Rest. E. And. Uh. or One. Rest. And. Uh. or One. E. And. Rest. Stuff like that. That, plus a metronome, plus time, will give awesome speed and endurance
    Happy Drumming!

Great advice here. Do exercises from "Stick Control" with your feet. Your coordination and double bass skills will more than likely improve a tremendous amount!

I started playing double 2-3 months ago... .a couple things that have helped me:

    - Play paradiddles. It really did help develop a controlled hit between both feet in time.

    - Play whatever simple pattern you like on the kit, and alternate to your left foot playing the bass every measure, every 2 measures, whatever works... so, 1-2 measures with the right foot, 1-2 measures on the left, then repeat. It went a long way to developing strength and control in my left leg.

    Good luck

You may also want to try both heel-up and heel-down techniques.
